Turki Al-Shiekh says the result of the first fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk would have been “different” if the Gypsy King’s father, John Fury, wasn’t in his corner between rounds.
SugarHill and John Fury told Tyson to do things that were not effective due to his age, slow movements and colossal size. John’s advice wasn’t the problem. When you have an old, limited fighter, even the perfect instructions won’t help.
Fury resembled a dinosaur that was outmatched by Usyk, who was faster and more agile. SugaHill and John’s instructions in his corner were completely useless to him.
Was John a distraction?
John Fury was there, giving simple instructions and not talking much. In the corner it sounded quiet.
If anything, John was the only positive voice in Fury’s corner that night because SugarHill Steward didn’t seem like he was helping much. He looked like someone who panicked when things turned sour for Tyson.
Tyson’s real problem was Usyk’s talent. He wasn’t good enough to land his shots, and looked mentally weak when the talented Ukrainian hurt him in the ninth round.
Looking back at the fight, it didn’t look like Tyson was paying any attention to his father, John Fury, between rounds. He always looked to and listened to his coach, SugarHill Steward, for instructions.
Fury’s real problem was his own inability to handle Usyk’s body shots, which had him struggling against the ropes. Tyson’s mobility wasn’t there for this fight. Age seemed to have caught up with him, preventing him from fighting in the center of the ring.
Fury (34-2-1, 24 KOs) lost the first fight by a 12-round split decision to Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) on May 18, 2024.
“Fury-Usyk, the lack of atmosphere, I felt it hindered him in the final two or three rounds. I felt it might have been different if it was at Wembley (stadium) in England. Maybe Tyson would have listened,” he said Carl Froch to his YouTube channel about his belief that Tyson Fury would have beaten Oleksandr Usyk in their first fight on May 18, 2024 if the contest had been held in London, England.
“It would have been different if his father hadn’t been in the corner,” he said Turki Al-Shiekh about Tyson’s father, John Fury, who was in the corner during the first Fury-Usyk fight.
John looked pretty harmless in the corner during the first fight. Some fans believe John gave instructions that conflicted with what SugarHill Steward told him during the fight, but it was more of a situation where Tyson didn’t have the talent to do what he was told.
