Sanju Samson turned away as Tilak Varma appointed the Captain of the South Zone for the Duleep 2025 Trophy

Young Hyderabad Batter Tilak Varma has been appointed captain of the South Zone team for the next Duleep 2025 trophy. This year, the tournament returns to its traditional format, with six zonals teams—South, North, East, West, Central and Northeast – Compeizing.

Last season, the Duleep trophy featured teams from India A, B, C and D that were selected by national selectors. But this season, the tournament will be held in the traditional format next month. The decision to appoint Tilak Varma as captain was taken during the selection meeting of the southern zone held in the Siechem Stadium in Pondicherry on Saturday, July 26.

However, Tilak Varma lost the season of the Ranji 2024-25 trophy due to international tasks, but is currently sensational. The 22 -year -old has been headlines during his debut regional championship with Hampshire, marking a century in debut against Essex, followed by impressive times of 56, 47 and another 100 in his next games.

The staff of the southern part also featured Hyderabad’s workshop, Tanmay Agarwal, who scored 934 runs in only seven games during the last season of the Ranji Trophy and helped Hyderabad return to the elite group. R. Smaran of Karnataka, who scored 516 runs last season, has been appointed reserve player.

Devdutt Padikkal and N Jagadeaesan to play under Tilak Varma

N. Jagadeesan by Tamil Nadu, who recently received his first call in India after Ris Hurbh Pant’s injury, is also included in the squad along with Devdutt Padikkal and R. Sai Kishore. Sanju Samson, one of Kerala’s main cricketers, is missing in the tournament squad.

The Indian drummer has recovered from the injury he suffered during the IPL 2025, and that is why selectors have decided to move from him to the tournament.

The Duleep Troophy 2025 begins on August 28 in Bengaluru, with the northern area facing the east and the central area in the northern part -east in the quarterfinals. South Zone will play the winner of the first quarter of the semifinal on September 4, while West Zone will meet with the winner of the second quarter of the tournament.
