The Supreme Court of the Philippine blocked the trial of impeachment against Sarah Duterte, which noted the victory of the country’s vice president.
The lower house of the Philippine Parliament voted for the impeachment of Duterte in February after it was accused of misuse of state funds and threatened to kill President Ferdinand “Bongbon” Marcos -Youth.
But the court press secretary told reporters on Friday that the vote for impeachment violated the constitutional ban on implementation of impeachment a year.
At a press conference on Friday, the court said he did not release the charges she faced. But the ruling means that she was given a deferral from the possible displacement, at least until February 2026.
It also gives it more time to gather support for the possible presidential run in the decisive years that run in the 2028 election.
But even before the ruling, the chances of condemning Sarah in the Senate Imperial Court or even the beginning of the trial were uncertain about the change in political alliances that followed the general elections in May.
The hostility between Duterte and Marcos reigned in the election, and Duterte won more places in the Senate, which was expected, which was considered as a rebuff.
The 15-member Supreme Court is dominated by the appointed parents of Sarah.
The impeachment process is very separate in the chaotic political landscape of the Philippines. Since the restoration of democracy to the country in 1986, only one such attempt has successfully ended with the verdict – the Supreme Court, Renata Crown, who was convicted of concealing his assets in 2012.
The impeachment of the former President Joseph Estada for alleged vaccination in 2001 stopped after public anger over the trial caused mass street protests, which eventually led to his breakdown.
