Vince McMahon’s WWE Sexual Misconduct Scandal: Everything to Know

Vince McMahon was Chief Executive and Chairman of the Board World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for decades before “voluntarily” giving up.

McMahon confirmed in June 2022 that he was resigning from his job while the company investigates allegations of misconduct against him.

“I have promised my full cooperation to the investigation by the Special Committee, and I will do everything possible to support the investigation,” he said in a statement at the time. “I have also promised to accept the findings and outcome of the investigation, whatever they may be.”

Several hours later, McMahon was opened SmackDown Live with great fanfare. “It’s an honor as always to stand before you here tonight, WWE universe,” he said during the June 17, 2022 broadcast. “I’m here simply to remind you of the four words that we saw in what we call it a WWE signature. Those four words are: then, now, forever, and the most important word is together. Welcome to SmackDown!”

In the midst of McMahon’s departure from WWE’s active series, federal law enforcement officials have continued investigate the allegations. The former professional athlete has not yet been charged with a crime.

Almost two years later, McMahon faced a second misconduct scandal when he was a former WWE employee accuse him sexual assault, human trafficking and abuse in a lawsuit in January 2024. He denied all allegations before resigning from WWE’s parent company, TKO Group.

What was Vince McMahon Accused of?

Days before McMahon stepped down from his position in the WWE, the Wall Street Journal reported paying a $3 million settlement to a former employee after an alleged affair. He has not publicly commented on the allegations.

In January 2024, former WWE staff Janelle Grant accused McMahon of sexual assault, human trafficking and abuse in a lawsuit.

How Did Vince McMahon Respond to the Scandal?

McMahon stepped down as CEO and Chairman of the board in June 2022, pledging in a statement to cooperate with the ongoing investigation and “accept the findings and outcome.” He eventually returned as a board member six months later in January 2023, agreeing to reimburse WWE for any expenses related to the investigation. According to an SEC statement the following August, McMahon has since paid about $17.4 million to cover the costs.

As for the 2024 lawsuit, McMahon vehemently denied all allegations.

“This lawsuit is full of lies, indecent events that never happened, and vindictive distortions of the truth. He will vigorously defend himself,” a McMahon spokesman said Us Weekly in a statement.

Who has replaced Vince McMahon as WWE CEO?

McMahon’s daughter, Stephanie McMahonhas been appointed interim CEO and Chairman in her father’s absence.

“I love this company and I am committed to working with the Independent Directors to strengthen our culture and our Company; it is extremely important to me that we have a safe and collaborative workplace,” Stephanie said in a statement at the time. “I am committed to doing everything in my power to help the Special Committee complete its work, including organizing the cooperation of the entire company to assist in the completion of the investigation and to implement its findings.”

Is Vince McMahon Still Involved in YSC Operations?

Chief Creative Officer triple H (real name Paul Levesque), who is married to Stephanierevealed during August 2023 press conference for WWE’s Summer Slam that Vince is not currently working with the WWE creative team.

“As far as contributions, I would just say this. The reason why WWE is what it is … you could make an argument – a very valid one – that without Vince and his vision for this business, it might not be here anymore,” Triple H said on the when “There were certain things back then, back in the day, that were very popular … that disappeared off the face of the planet. He continued: “In this period, if each of us did not look to him moments in time for advice on thoughts or ideas or if we had a question to go to him and ask him, we would be foolish not to do so. . It is sitting next to someone who knows more about this, or has forgotten more about this, than you will ever know, and not to use that in some aspect. But is it day to day? No. Is he in it all the time? No. If anyone has, they’ve earned that right to be able to do that.”

Vince has formally resigned from his position as executive chairman of the TKO Group, WWE’s parent company, in January 2024.

“Out of respect for the WWE Universe, the amazing TKO business and its board members and shareholders, partners and constituents, and all the employees and Superstars who helped make WWE the global leader it is today, I have decided to resign from my job executive chairmanship and board of directors of TKO, effective immediately,” it said in a shared statement Us. “I stand by my previous statement that Ms. Grant is full of lies, indecent cases that never happened, and that he distorts the truth with a vengeance. I intend to vigorously defend myself against these baseless accusations, and I look forward to clearing my name.”

Has Vince McMahon Cooperated With The Federal Investigation?

Several days before Triple H’s comments about Vince’s lack of day-to-day involvement with the media brand, the SEC execute a search warrant and issue a subpoena to Vince and the WWE. Back CNNUS federal agents requested copies of certain documents. Vince has not addressed the warrant or the subpoena.

How Were the Hush Money Payments Settled?

In January 2024, McMahon agreed to pay a civil penalty of $400,000 while repaying WWE $1.3 million. McMahon was not forced to admit or deny the SEC’s findings.

McMahon released a statement through X shortly after the settlement was announced.

“Case closed,” McMahon wrote. “Today marks the end of almost three years of investigation by various government agencies. There was much speculation as to what exactly the government was investigating and what the outcome would be. As today’s decision shows, much of that speculation was misguided and misleading.”

He continued, “In the end, this was nothing more than minor accounting errors regarding some personal payments I made several years ago while I was CEO of WWE. I am delighted that I can now put all this behind me.”

McMahon’s statement is a bit of a mistake, however, as Grant’s civil suit will still move forward as a result of the settlement.
