I know what you did last summer Fans were ecstatic when it was announced that some of the original members of the cast would return for the 2025 legacy sequence, with the exception of one name clearly left off the list: Ryan Phillippe.
Phillippe Barry Cox portrayed the first installment of the film franchise, released in 1997. It was part of the core group of friends, which also included Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray Bronon (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar). The film follows the four after they were involved in a hit and run that comes back to harass it a year later. His character was eventually killed by The fishermanand his body was stored in an icebox on a boat.
While Barry did not reach the 1998 sequence I still know what you did last Summer, one thing that horror fans know is that the fact that a character is not dead does not mean that they cannot return to some extent. A point case, Sarah Michelle GellarHelen was horribly killed in the first movie to just i appear in a dream sequence 2025.

In terms of Phillippe’s absence from the 2025 film, producer Neal H. Moritz’s answer was quite simple – Barry’s return did not suit the narrative. He admitted that he felt he would have “been pushing him” to bring the actor back during an interview on July 2025 with People.
“He had to be too much. We have mentioned Barry Cox. He can shout out,” Moritz told the outlet. “But, yes, he started to feel like too many ideas. But he doesn’t want a lack of love for Ryan – it’s amazing. And I think there’s a very fun way to integrate Ryan into a sequence that I hope is going on.”
Phillippe spoke of the cruel murder of his character in the original film and how death has been a common theme in many of the projects he has appeared over the years.
“I feel like I made the wrong move died in all of these projects because then when they are resurrected, I don’t have to be a part of them,” he said during the May 2025 of the “Just for Variety” podcast, referring to the deaths of his characters in Cruel intentions and Great air as well as Ikwydls. “I used to think it was cool. I’m like, ‘If I could take a character to his last moment.’ Now, I’m like, ‘What do you think? No, you want to live in case there are more movies to make.’ “
He continued, “But it’s cool to see that those films, those projects suffered – had the culturally impact they did – they would want to revisit them. It definitely makes you feel like a dinosaur or aware of your age, but at the same time, it’s a compliment to something you were involved with.”
Phillippe was fast to shot down rumors That his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon Help her land a role in Ikwydls In 1997.
In July 2025, Prime Video shared a post via Instagram, writing, “Reese Witherspoon Audition for I know what you did last summer But her mind changed and pulled back. Instead, her love at the time, Ryan Phillippe, recommended Barry’s role. “
Phillippe replied, “Not sure that that story is truuuuuue, but it’s very cute.😊.”
The former was married between 1998 and 2008.
