Star NFL Shaquil Barrett and his wife, Jordanna Barrettreflects on the death of Arrayah’s daughter two years after she drowned.
“It’s always a battle. It’s always a battle. It’s not easier but it’s something we’ve been managing, dealing with, just talking to each other and talking to NFL families, talking to friends, the children and making sure they are doing right,” said Shaquil, 32, on Sunday, July 20, episode Good morning Americanoting that the pair is “still moving forward, healing in a very way.”
Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker noted that he and Jordanna, 32, did not have a “basic step” for pool safety.
“
Shaquil explained that the The morning of the event In 2023, the gate that led to the pool and door was unlocked – and the door was tying away.
“We didn’t know that the life vests and float devices made it a false sense of safety for the babies, thinking they could swim now because every time they are in the pool, they have the life vests forward, life jackets on a device or float device,” he added. “We’ve been doing that all the time now.”
Shaquil noted that he and Jordanna had been “preparing for the worst scenario” by getting their children up with pool security. (Shaquil and Jordanna are the parents of the sons of Shaquil Jr., 13, Braylon, 12, and the daughters of Aaliyah, 10, Outah, 17 months and Amaiah Marie, 1 month.)
“Most importantly, most drowning occurs during times other than Simim,” added Jordanna. “It is important to have all those safety layers before they are in the pool actually and lead to them in the pool.”
Good morning America Notably some suggestions that parents can follow are: having a locked and clicked safety gate, a camera that warns if a child is outside and gets alarms on each door. The outlet also urged parents not to leave toys in the pool – something that Jordanna agrees with.
“I think it is a key too, is to put every swim toy away,” he said. “I think that brings children to want to go to the pool, want to have fun and they see all the fun things. So making sure that those things are given away so that it takes the distraction from them, is very important.”
Since then Shaquil and Jordanna have started their own organization, Arrayah Hope Foundation, To honor their daughter.
“Extending to us, reaching out to any drowning institution,” he said, “and I’m pretty sure they can lead you (in the right direction).”
