Meta Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told podcaster Joe Rogan that members of President Biden’s administration have been yelling at his staff to take down content on their behalf.

Meta recently announced that it would ending controversial fact-checking practices and lifting restrictions on speech to “restore freedom of expression” on the Facebook, Instagram and Meta platforms, acknowledging that current content moderation practices “have gone too far.” Zuckerberg spoke about the platform’s fight to preserve free speech while fending off pressure from the Biden administration amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the Biden administration, when they were trying to roll out the vaccine program,” social networks The CEO said, “while they were trying to push this program, they were also trying to censor anyone who basically opposed it. And they pushed us very hard to shoot things that were honest, that were true. They basically pushed us and said that you know that “anything that says vaccines can have side effects, you basically need to take off.” And I said, “We’re not going to do that, we’re clearly not going to do that, I mean that’s undeniably true.”

Meta and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has detailed the pressure he has faced from governments, particularly the Biden administration, to censor content on their behalf.

“Who are they?” Rogan asked. “Who told you to take down things that talk about vaccine side effects?”

“These were people from the Biden administration,” Meta’s CEO said.

He then talked about “government censorship,” much of which he said was covered by a congressional investigation, where he said, “I mean, these people from the Biden administration called our team and yelled at them and cursed at them and it’s like … these documents are all there, as it were.”

Zuckerberg summarized that the conflict between his company and the government “basically came down to where we said, ‘No, we’re not going to, we’re not going to destroy what’s true. It’s funny.”

Rogan talks to Zuckerberg

Podcaster Joe Rogan asked Zuckerberg if there were any consequences for those who demanded censorship of Americans. Zuckerberg joked that those who lost the 2024 presidential election.

Rogan later asked about the response after the investigation, “has anyone been prosecuted? Were there, I mean, any consequences?”

“I mean, they lost the election,” Zuckerberg joked.
