The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the M23 rebels have signed a ceasefire agreement in Qatar to end the fight between the warring parties.
On Saturday, called “Declaration of Principles”, it is noted that both sides should refrain from attacking “hatred propaganda” and “any attempt to capture new positions on Earth”.
The declaration is intended as a roadmap for a permanent settlement.
Both sides agreed to implement the terms of the transaction by July 29. The final peace deal must happen by August 18 and must match last month American deal between Dr. Congo and Rwandadenials the allegations that it supports M23.
The decades of conflicts increased earlier this year, when the M23 rebels seized control over a large part of the Eastern Congo Minerals, including the regional capital, Gomo, Bukava and two airports.
The UN says thousands have been killed, and since then hundreds of thousands of civilians have been forced from their homes. M23 disputes the numbers, saying that less than 1000 people have been killed.
Dr. Congo’s press -secretary Patrick Muya said the transaction had taken into account the government “red line” – including “not to cancel” M23 from the occupied areas.
But in the video posted on the X, M23 negotiator Benjamin Mbonima stated that the transactions did not mention such pulling.
This is the first direct agreement between the two sides, as the rebels launched an offensive at the border of the year.
Qatar said the negotiations had to continue.
The African Union Commission called the Declaration “milestone” in strong peaceful efforts and security in the region.
The declaration also outlines the obligation to restore state power in the eastern Doctor of Congo.
This is the last in the long line of unsuccessful peace deals in the region.
One of the main players of today’s conflict – M23 rebels – came out of the unsuccessful peace deal 16 years ago, which never acted on demobilization.
In March, Dr. Congo President Felix Teadi and his Rundan counterpart Paul Kagam met in Qatar and both called for the Sea.
The following month, Dr Congo and M23 Group agreed to cease the fire that promoted Qatar, but the struggle continued on the ground.
The Washington transaction, which took place in June, was met with a broad criticism as a key incentive for US intervention, is access to Dr. Congo’s huge mineral wealth. President Trump boasted this feat.
There were talk about Tshasecki and President Rwanda Paul Kagam, who was traveling to Washington to meet Trump together, though the date was not recorded.
