US President Donald Trump praised Liberia President Joseph Boaka for talking “Good English” and asked him where he went to school.
What Trump could miss is something that Liberia shares a unique and long -standing historical connection with the United States.
Many Liberians talk to an American accent, local famous as an American “sulfur”, which has a great local language intonation, Koloquoi.
Perhaps such a intonation that Trump has taken over.
Here are five things you need to know about the country:
Liberia was founded by the liberated African-American slaves in 1822 before proclaiming independence in 1847.
Thousands of black Americans and liberated Africans – rescued from transatlantic slave owners – settled in Liberia in the colonial era.
Former US President Abraham Lincoln officially declared the independence of Liberia in 1862, but the country retained a lot of us, and it remained in the American “sphere of influence” in the colonial period.
In connection with this integration, liberal culture, landmarks and institutions have strong African-American influence.
Ten out of 26 Liberia presidents were born in the US.
The capital of Liberia, Manrovia, was named after the 5th President of America James Monroe, who was a strong supporter of the American Colonization Society (ACS).
AKC was an organization responsible for relocating the liberated African Americans in West Africa – which resulted in the founding of Liberia.
Not surprisingly, the early architecture of the city has greatly influenced the American style buildings.
Many streets in Manrovia are named after colonial American figures reflecting the foundation of the city and historical ties with the US.
Liberia’s flag is very reminiscent of the American flag. It has 11 alternations of red and white stripes and a blue square with one white star.
The White Star symbolizes Liberia as the first independent republic in Africa.
Compared to the United States, the flag has 13 lanes representing the original 13 colonies and 50 stars, one for each state.
The Liberian flag was developed by seven black women – all born in America.
Timothy Via, son of former Liberia President George Wia, is an American professional footballer playing for the Italian Juventus club, as well as the US national team.
A 25-year-old forward was born in the US but started his professional career from Paris Saint-Germain in France, where he won the Ligue 1 title before moving to the Scottish team.
His father, George, is a Liberian football legend that won the Ballon d’Or in 1995, playing for the Italian Jewentus Ac Milan rivals. He is the only African winner of this award – and was elected president in 2018.
Liberia has prepared the first woman’s President Ellen Johnson Sirlif.
It was elected in 2005, two years after the end of the bloody civil war and held the presidency by 2018.
Sirlif has a strong American experience when she studied at Madison Business College, and then went to Harvard University, where she graduated from economists.
It has been recognized worldwide and rewards for maintaining peace during its administration.
Her story stood with excellent feats of unwavering and courage.
In 2011, together with the GBOU and Karman’s Lima, she received the Nobel Prize for Peace for her efforts for women’s further rights.
In 2016, Forbes listed it among the most powerful women in the world.
