Drew Diets, a real human being, here again for a huge freakin robot to talk about the failure of another famous film.
We look at one of my favorite personal film failures, a movie I’ve previously addressed on my Weekly Film Club Podcast, Genrevision.
Sci-Fi/Horror Progression dismissed by critics and thrown quickly by audiences for being less inevitable than its award-winning masterpiece predecessor.
And thanks in part to the reception of this sequence, there has never been another film made from its franchise.
Climb into the telepod with me as I explore why The feathers ii Failed.
The feather roots ii
Originated as George Langelaan’s short story in 1957, The fly It was first adapted in 1958 as a successful feature film which is also one of my favorites I would be happy to make a video.

Chris Walas, the Impact Artist who led the production on Cronenberg’s second -making in the Director’s Chair for The feathers ii.
Deliberately, Walas wanted the sequence to be more of a full -driving monster film rather than the operatic tragedy of Cronenberg film.
In some ways, this reflected the lower and less acceptable budget sequences to the original 1958 film, Return the feathers and The curse of the feather.
As far as public opinion was concerned, a little chance of a sequel could be able to pair with the quality of the miraculous achievement of Cronenberg which is widely accepted.
So, The feathers ii Already struggling with many baked obstacles before it even rolls a film: less perceived nature sequences, a precursor that could not possibly live, and an artistic approach that would highlight how different this record is from the previous film.
Fly II Story
Story The feathers ii Focus on Martin Brundle, the child’s main characters Seth Brundle and Veronica Quaife from the first film.
Martin is a laboratory being built in Bartok Industries, the company that funded Seth Brundle’s telepod experiments.
Martin is aging at a faster rate because of his corrupted DNA, but also has genius intelligence and tries to solve the problem of his genetic fate.
Naturally, he finishes turning into an amazing flight monster before all is said and done.
Gross-Out effects go big
Without combing through every piece of the plot or giving you my review of The feathers ii – that’s what The Genrevision episode is there for – enough to say, The feathers ii provides on one expectation that people had for a sequence The fly: the effects of goopy, gross out.
But while Cronenberg’s film is deliberately immersed in a tragic and refractory tone, The feathers ii Trying to have more fun with his effects of effects.
And Boy never does, leaving an incredible martinfly puppet throughout the highlight of the film, giving us one of the cinema’s biggest head presses, and crafting the best surface tear ever given to filming.
However, it is not difficult to see why this more celebrating attitude towards the blood and Bonanza beast might not have sat properly with audiences at the time.
By The feathers iiTone is certainly less dour than his predecessor, the story does not pull the piss out of herself. The characters and the story are all treated with real emotional pressures, which can lead to some dissonance to audience members when things go beautiful.
Cronenberg’s film treated the effects with greatest sincerity in an effort to disgust and depress people. Chris Walas has the same level of sincerity in his approach with the effects for The feathers iiBut it’s not the same emotional goal as the Cronenberg approach.
By the end of the story, Martin is our complete hero and that makes his climatic conflict much closer to the story of a superhero than the tragic romance of the first film.
And I’m ready to bet this didn’t click with expectations that were brought over audiences The fly.
The dog dies and is much worse
Now, The feathers ii It has a very dark and depressing key element to its story that would be more in line with the emotional expectations of the first film, but it is the worst kind of plot you could do in terms of audiences who like your film.
Martin befriend one of the test dogs in the lab but is a testament to it to be used in the telepod experiment. It becomes a hidden and suffering creature that Martin is told that he is being eupled.
But that’s a lie and Martin discovers that his friend Canine was kept alive. This leads to Martin killing the dog on screen in a moment we bet money on to make someone leave the theater in protest.
Again, you can hear what I think about all this for the movie in general GenrevisionBut let’s make it clear that dogs dying in films are a well -known negative mark against films for a non -trivial proportion of the population watching films.
And if you kill a dog in a movie and don’t treat it in a way that most people feel is absolutely right, it is likely to hurt your film in a significant way.
Supplement The feathers iiTroubles that he was anchored with younger actors who did not have a sizable store with audiences. I spoke about the same issue in the The reign of fire video and The feathers ii He has the same burden.
But unlike most movies we talk about for this series, The feathers ii He actually opened at the number one point at the Box Office. And on the reported budget of $ 12.5 million, it would get $ 20 million at the domestic box office and another nearly $ 19 million in international markets.
So where has the “failed” part come in?
The Fly II killed the franchise
Well, The feathers ii cut into ribbons by most critics and that general view of the film has stuck. Another sequel was being developed, but things fell apart on that entry in part due to poor reception The feathers ii Making another sequence seems too dangerous.
And that poor reception ended clouding any other potential franchise in film form. While the continuation of a comic book by The feathers iiStory, no other film project has highlighted with this property.

I am not saying that more Fly Movies, but IP Age is loose, seeing a film franchise is cut off after a single sequence feels quite rare and should add a layer of reflection on it The fly ii.
It shows that money is not the measuring stick to measure the success of pop culture by. Although I will always love martinfly, it is likely to continue to be a bit of a bastard in the eyes of most people because it is not as good as his father.
