The warning signs were already flashing when hundreds of young people celebrated the public holiday on July 4 at Camp Mystic, the Christian summer retreat of all girls located on the Guadalpepe River in Texas.
According to state officials, there was no rain drop in the area before pouring when the river grew 26 feet (8 m) in less than an hour.
By the evening of Saturday, at least 51 people were killed, including 15 children.
The first hint of devastation appeared on Thursday morning, when the rain and thunderstorms permeated a number of central Texas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) made a general warning called “Flood” at 13:18 this day for parts of the region, including the Cer.
In the first hours of Friday, the forecast became more terrible as the NWS issued a number of upgraded warnings. The San Saba River, the Coch River and the Colorado River increased.
At 04.03, the NWS directed a notice of a “particularly dangerous situation” reserved for the most relevant and potentially deadly scenarios such as forest fires.
Another “particularly dangerous situation” was presented for the city of Kerwil at 05.34, before dawn on Friday.
“Residents and vacationers should look for a higher soil! It is expected that the threatening floods along the river,” said forecasters.
“Automated rains indicate that a large and deadly wave of flooding moves along the Guadalpepe River. Flood flashes are already happening.”
Such alerts are divided into NWS accounts in social media and news broadcast, but most people slept.

But the region is also known as “Flash Flaod Alley” from the re -threatening threat that has devastated local communities over the years.
Asked why Riverside’s summer camp was not evacuated, officials said the sudden scale of the flood caught them unexpectedly.
“Nobody knew that such a flood was coming,” said County Judge Rob Kelly.
