Oleksander Usyk says he has a “secret” plan for his rematch with Tyson Fury this Saturday night. He claims he and his team watched his fight with Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs) last May and came up with a game plan against him.
Usyk may not need a secret plan to defeat Fury because he looks pretty worn out this week. Gypsy King Fury seems to have been torturing himself during boot camp, and may have gone overboard with his preparation. It took a mental toll on Fury, losing for the first time.
Unified heavyweight champion Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) neutralized Fury’s grappling tactics that he had been using effectively in many of his recent fights in the past four years since he added SugarHill Steward as his trainer. This strategy involves holding and leaning.
It didn’t work against Usyk and Francis Ngannou, the matches in which Fury struggled. As he got older, Fury became too reliant on abuse to win his fights.
“I’m going to knock him out. I’m going to give Turki what I promised him in May. I’m going to cook rabbit in his kitchen,” Tyson Fury said today Great Arrivals for his fight against unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night. “And the new one.”
“It will be a great fight. I feel like I’m going to win,” Usyk said. “Same again because it’s my plan. Maybe we have a new (plan), because I’ve worked. We know a little bit because we saw the fight. I have a new secret.”
Fury looked physically worn out during the Big Arrival today, suggesting he may have put on too much weight in a hurry. He didn’t get that first fight appearance again for seven months, and you have to wonder if he went overboard in training camp.
They were calling Fury’s camp “Prison”, and he reportedly trained with Moses Itauma, among many other hard knocks. Did they take something out of Fury, leaving the gaunt, old giant we saw this week? If Fury loses the rematch, he will have a good excuse to tell the fans, blaming it on overdoing it on the training ground.
A second loss for Fury would ruin Turki Alalshikh’s plans for a trilogy match between them. Turki told Fury this week to “Get the job done” against Usyk, which is easier said than done. If you watched the ninth round of the first fight, it’s a nearly impossible task for Fury to win without referee interference to prevent Usyk from knocking him out.
