For 20 years cast of It’s always sunny in Philadelphia Been offering laughs to FX viewers in taking on some of the world’s most controversial topics.
Kimberly Potts’ new book, (Almost) is always sunny in Philadelphia: How three friends spent $ 200 to create the longest live-acting comedy in history and help build a network – released on Tuesday, July 1 – exploring how Rob Mcelhenney (Mac) took his dream and a video camera to create the successful show. While the Potts book was full of stories from the cast, and those who were there to see it all, it is one story she has been sharing during the press trip that has been making the most waves.
Potts learned during research for that book Danny Devito (Frank) “almost drowned” while filming an episode called “The Gang Goes to Hell: Part Two,” broadcast in 2016 as part of the 11th Show Term.
“They swim, they still get up to the top. And to shoot that scene, they were underwater,” Potts told the New York Post Last month. “At one time, Danny accidentally kicked, I think, in the shoulder – close to his head. As I was told, he almost drowned,” he added. “Sure, everyone was afraid he was in trouble.”

Mcelhenney was not always a star
Before the show was hit FX, Mcelhenney recruited his friends to film a low budget version of It’s always sunny pilot. Stayed behind the camera, offering a Mac role to David Hornsby.

Charlie’s trauma
The end of season 1 called “Charlie Got Molested,” shows Charlie facing the possibility of suffering in his high school gym teacher, accused of Molestu students. However, the perpetrator was not always a teacher. Chairman FX John Landgraf Having made one big change before the episode went into the air, Potts wrote.
“Initially, the Molester accused was a priest,” the book reads. “Landgraf suggested to Mcelhenney that the character was not a member of the clergy, so they made him a gym teacher instead.”
What happened to Lil ‘Kev
A season 3 chapter called, “Sweet Dee’s Dating and (R-Word) a person,” viewers to the character of Lil ‘Kev (Kyle Davis). In the years since the broadcasting episode, Davis told Potts that he had received a ton of DMS from fans from sending the meme of him moving popcorn to his mouth from the episode. But that scene almost went as planned.
“I almost literally choked to death eating the popcorn,” Davis shared. “Because we’re doing all these, I still said, ‘S ***!’ Like, they continued to run the camera, and said, ‘Okay, let’s do it again.
Let’s make lunch
The sunny writers room always included Mcelhenney, Day and Howerton until season 3. With a successful show under their belt, the trio employed Scott Marter and Rob Rosell – But they had no idea what a real writers’ room looked like.
“Mcelhenney and Company were unaware that, in terms of the writers’ room, there was such a thing as a free lunch,” wrote Potts. The author also spoke to Rosell, who had fond memories of this moment.
“They didn’t care for their lunch, namely, generally you bring your lunch to you in the writers’ room, because you usually work so much,” he said. “I remember Rob (Mcelhenney) shocked about that, and calls FX for it, and they say yes.”

It’s always sunny Fans are well versed with the D *** towel – thanks to the Mac’s 5 season device. The towel is exactly what it sounds and when the gang began to sell them in real life, 20,000 to 30,000 units had been sold. (They are still available today.)
Mcelhenney cameos
The show’s success led to several Cameos to Mcelhenney in other major series. Appeared in Lose As a short -lived character of Aldo after hearing that the show’s cocreaTor Damon Lindelof is a fan.
