A key witness in the corruption case of the former mayor of Peru Lima’s capital was found dead in his home, according to the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office, less than three months before the trial.
Jose Miguel Castro, who lived under house arrest, was an official of the municipality during the term of Susana Vilaran as the mayor from 2011 to 2014.
He co -authored in the trial with Ms. Vilaran, who is accused of receiving a bribe of $ 10 million (7.3 million pounds) from Brazilian construction firms.
In 2019, Ms. Vilaran admitted that she had received funds from these companies, but denied it a bribe. Mr. Castro cooperated with the prosecutor’s office. The cause of his death is not yet known.
“He was the second most important person behind Ms Vilaran,” said Prosecutor Jose Daming Perez Peruvian N.
“We were waiting for his valuable contribution,” he added.
Ms Vilaran, 75, is accused of conspiracy, money laundering and the formation of a criminal organization that has received millions of Odebrecht construction companies – now called Novonor – and OAS.
Prosecutors said Mr. Castro was allegedly on a business trip.
In 2019, Mrs. Vilaran confessed that she had received funds from Odebrecht and OAS to finance her Mary in 2013 to remain in office, but denied what she was a bribe.
The trial is due on September 23.
Mrs. Vilaran is one of a number of Peruvian politicians involved in the scandal with Adebrecht.
In 2016, the Brazilian construction giant confessed to the biblor of officials across Latin America and parts of Africa to get construction contracts.
Since then, a number of former Peruvian presidents have been investigated, including Alant Humala, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison earlier this year, and Alejandra Toada, who was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison last year.
Another former leader Alan Garcia was killed when the authorities arrived at his home to arrest him in 2019.
