The couple turned the French castle into bed and breakfast

After many years of life in San Francisco, California, native Maberg, 59 years old, and 64 -year -old Roland Salvato were ready for change.

Salvato spent about 30 years, working as a project manager, and Moberg worked as a marketing consultant. After running his own company, Roma Group, they decided to start a bed and breakfast in the countryside.

“We lived in San Francisco and survived everything that a beautiful city could offer and we wanted to change,” Mabererg CNBC says. “We love to travel and engage, so we thought it could become a second career for us.”

The Chateau Foundation dates back to the 12th century, and other parts of the property were built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The idea to start a bed and breakfast did not come from the desire to make money. Instead, Salvat and Moberg sought the task to take on the next chapter.

“We obviously made good money, but it was not the goal of any of our lives,” says Salvat. “Experience is much important than material wealth. Any investment in our curiosity is worthy.”

The couple started looking for a new home, looking for property that would not only take place for many guests, but also for animals.

“I always knew what I wanted to move to the country. I just didn’t know what country,” says Salvat.

They looked in Spain, Portugal and North Africa, but France and its rich history continued to call them. It also helped that Salvato had already talked to -French.

Before the couple moved, the castle was not upgraded for 50 years.

They viewed the country, looking for the perfect place, as a result, they were in a city called Druelle Balsac. Here they found a castle that felt perfect. The property of 6.458 square feet was included in the list of 736,000 euros (approximately $ 835,000) and included the main castle with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, as well as with a four -room, two -room house.

The Chateau Foundation dates back to the 12th century, and other parts of the property were built in the 14th and 15th centuries.

In 2017, Moberg and Salvato sold their apartment in San Francisco for $ 1.45 million and used the money to buy cash. They put the rest of the money for repair and life costs. Chateau was not repaired and had no modernization over 50 years.

“We decided that we want to do it for us at first, because we must live here, we must be comfortable,” Salvato says.

It remains in Chateau, starting with $ 187 per night.

The repair began in 2018 and continues. Both estimate that they still spent about $ 332,000 – including dining, living room and kitchen.

But the property brings a certain profit for them. They were able to open a guest house for visitors for $ 238 per night, and the castle has three rooms for $ 187 per night.

“Very expensive French lesson”

At Balsak’s castle. The couple offer weekly seminars that include yoga classes, cooking, book arts, drawing and painting about $ 4,500 per person.

The couple repaired the kitchen in 2020.

The seminars help the beds and breakfasts to remain booked in the summer, which is usually their most busy season. Last year, $ 60 guests were hosted at the castle and brought $ 22,000, according to the documents considered by CNBC. The couples’ estimates are about $ 2212 for utilities, insurance and Wi-Fi. Last year, they paid about $ 2000 real estate taxes.

The business is not yet arrived, but the profit helps them walk.

“This small amount of money does not sound like a lot, but it really helps us cover a lot of costs on the castle, which is really what we wanted to do,” Moberg says.

The couple started repairing in 2018 and still spent more than $ 300,000.

While the bed and breakfast are not profitable, the couple uses their savings to cover the costs of life.

“I guess you could say it was a very expensive French lesson,” says Salvat.

And although husband and wife love living and welcoming guests in Shatto, they are most proud to be able to breathe new life into the property.

“We are just the wardens of this work of history and this heritage for the next generation,” says Salvat.

The main castle has three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, as well as four -room, two -room boarding house.
