Lyon included in League 1

Lyon has been included in the list of devices for the 2025-26 season of League 1, despite his Demotion in League 2while they have also been authorized to play in Europe League.

The seven times French champions finished sixth in League 1 last season, winning a place in Europa League, a competition in which they reached the quarterfinals by 2024-25.

But they were relegated to the second layer this week after not having to convince the National Management Management (DNCG), the body that oversees the financial welfare of clubs in France, which had improved after their temporary democitation in November.

This has caused the members’ calls to the owner John Textor to sell the club, while Lyon measures to appeal the decision.

As such, Lyon qualified on Friday as the next season of League 1, with its opening programmed against the lenses that took place on the weekend of August 16-17.

Additionally, the club confirmed in a statement that reached an agreement with the UEFA club’s financial control body to compete in Europa League, subject to the call against the DNCG’s decision in its favor.

He read: “Olympique Lyonnais completed the financial sustainability procedure and signed an agreement with the UEFA Club’s financial control body.

“The club could therefore participate in the Europa League of next season, subject to a favorable result of the call for the DNCG decision.

“Ol would like to thank the UEFA representatives who helped this process.”

Textor’s Eagle Football Group, which has a 77% participation in Lyon, announced that it had debts of 422 million pounds last October.

A statement from the club that responds to his demotional is: “Olympique Lyonnais recognizes the incomprehensible decision that the DNCG is presented and confirms that he will immediately file an appeal.

“In recent months, we have worked closely with the DNCG, satisfied all its applications with capital investments higher than the amounts requested. Thanks to the capital contributions of our shareholders and the sale of Crystal Palace, our cash position has improved significantly and we have more enough resources for the 2025-26 season.

“With so much proven cash liquidity and the sporting success of European competition in two consecutive years, we honestly do not understand how an administrative decision could relegate a great French club.

“Through our resource, we will establish our important cash resources as needed for Olympique Lyonnais to keep your place in the League 1.”

The Eagle Football Group also maintains the majority participation in the Brazilian Botafogo club and agreed to sell their shares at Crystal Palace in New York Jet Woody Johnson, an agreement waiting for the ratification of the Premier League.

Textor made the decision to sell Palace, as the club was at risk of being considered non-compliance with UEFA rules on multi-club property, which could have resulted in the London club to be expelled from Europe League, a competition for which they qualified after winning the CUP.
