NY ISLANDERS Choose Defender Matthew Shafer first in the NHL project 2025

New York Islands made Matthew Safeer’s defender No. 1 2025 nhl draft Friday.

17-year-old SHEFER-6 feet-2 and off Hamilton, Ontario.

He spent the last two seasons in the Hockey League Ontario.

Last year, Schaefer played only 17 games before breaking the collarbone in December, but his grip at both ends of the ice still brought it to the top of almost all drafts.

Schaefer is just the fifth defender, drawn up in the NHL’s overall standings since 2000, and the first after Owen Pauer went to Buffalo in 2021.
