He received a two -year prison sentence suspended on Thursday, June 26, who will not serve unless he breached conditions identified by a Dominican Republic judge.
“Look at us, wander,” justice Jakara Veras at Franco, 24, per The athletic. “Don’t go to minors for sexual purposes. If you don’t like people very close to your age, you have to wait your time.”
Prosecutors initially sought a five -year sentence for the former hope, who is currently on MlbA limited list as the league’s investigation remains open.
“Major League Baseball is pleased to have a joint domestic violence policy, a joint sexual assault and a joint childheat that reflects our commitment to these issues,” said MLB in A statement. “We are aware of a verdict today in the case of Wander Franco and we will finish our investigation at the appropriate time.”
In addition, the victim’s mother, Martha Vanessa Chevalier Almontereceived a 10 -year sentence for sexually trading her daughter. Prosecutors tried to show in the case that she was seeking financial earnings from Franco and had washed money.
“We respect the legal process in the Dominican Republic and believe it is important to allow her to run her course,” the Rays said in a statement of their own. “We will continue to co -operate fully with Major League Baseball as it monitors the situation. Out of respect for all concerned, we will not provide any further attention at this time.”
Franco was accused of having a four month relative with the girl in question allegedly transferred thousands of dollars to the mother to secure her consent. Since the allegations rose first in August 2023, two other women have brought forward allegations of abuse.
MLB placed Franco on the limited list at that time, just a month after the appearance of the Phenom’s first All-Star MLB. He had signed an 11 -year contract extension, $ 182 million with the Rays in 2021, but the club is not obliged to pay it on the limited list.
If Franco hopes to return to MLB, he will have to get a work visa to return to the United States. His conviction complicates the process, making it unlikely that he will see the money staying on his deal.
Immigration experts told The athletic Last year his conviction was likely to lead to a permanent ban from the United States.
