Australian young sensation Sam Konstas has taken the cricketing world by storm with his fearless debut in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against India at home.
The 19-year-old turned heads during the high-octane Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Melbourne, where he displayed a T20-style blitzkrieg that left the Indian bowlers scrambling for answers
The young Australian opener’s gutsy fifty included audacious firsts and rampages against none other than India’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, setting the stage for a memorable five-match Test series between the two giants of the cricket
But it wasn’t just Konstas’ bat that did the talking. In fact, Sam Konstas also found himself at the center of fiery on-field altercations with Indian legend Virat Kohli and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
The Boxing Day Test witnessed a heated exchange between Konstas and Kohli as the young Australian debutant refused to back down, earning him the admiration and ire of fans. Well, the drama carried over to the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney, where Konstas locked horns with Jasprit Bumrah during a tense final on Day 1.
The already enraged Indian pacer countered by dismissing Usman Khawaja in the same over, shooting a piercing death glare at the plucky young Australian at the packed SGC during the New Year’s Test. Despite those heated moments against India, Konstas was undeterred, showing a fighting spirit that became the hallmark of his debut series.
After Australia clinched the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy by crushing India 3-1 in the five-match Test series, Konstas reflected on the intense moments that defined his battles with Kohli and Bumrah. Speaking frankly, the Australian prodigy admitted emotions were high, but what happened next surprised him.

In an unexpected gesture after the match, Virat Kohli reached out to the youngster, offering words of encouragement that left a lasting impact on him. Sam Konstas told CODE Sports: “I loved every second of it, but there are great learnings to be had and to reflect on, and hopefully on future tours I can learn from that.”
Also, Konstas shared details about his conversation with Virat Kohli after their heated exchange at the MCG. He admitted to telling Kohli that he idolized him and in response, the former Indian skipper gave a humble reply. Konstas described Kohli as “down to earth” and mentioned that the Indian star wished him the best of luck for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour.
Sharing more details about his dream meeting with Kohli, Konstas noted: “I spoke to him a little bit after the match telling him that I idolize him and obviously it’s a great honor to play against him. When I told him, I said : “Wow, Virat Kohli is batting”. He just had this presence around him, the whole Indian crowd going into it. It was quite surreal.”
The Aussie gun signed off saying: “He was very down to earth. A lovely person, just wanting the best for me. I’ve idolized him since I was a kid and he’s a legend of the game. He was very kind and wished me everything the best, saying I hope I do well in the Sri Lanka tour if I’m there. My whole family loves Virat.”
