Part of the national hot suicide prevention line, which serves young people LGBTC, says it will soon close after Trump administration reduces funding.
The administration has accused the service of “radical gender ideology”.
It states that it will still finance a broader 988 suicide and crisis, of which the LGBTQ option is one part – and that all subscribers will receive “compassion and assistance”.
The Trevor project, an organization that helped launch the LGBTQ option, said the decision would have a harmful impact on vulnerable young people.
“Suicide prevention is people, not politics,” said James Black, CEO of the organization. He said his service was ordered to close for 30 days.
“The decision of the administration to remove a two-party service based on facts that effectively supports a group of young people at high risk through their dark moments is unclear,” Mr Black added.
The decision comes during the International Honor Moon, which marks LGBTQ culture and history.
This news also appeared ahead of the US Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday, which supported Tennessee’s ban on transitional medical care for minors.
General 988 Lifeline offers free support for call, texts or chat. It is funded by the administration of addiction and mental health services (Samhsa), a subsidiary of the US Health and Human Services Agency (HHS).
Currently, LGBTQ Youth can choose option 3 from the call menu to contact advisers.
After the changes, the remaining 988 rescue services “would focus on all help seekers,” including those who had previously decided to access LGBTQ youth services, Sams said.
But the hotline “will no longer be silage LGB+ Youth Services”, – Samsa wrote in a statement, dropping “T” and “Q”, which refers to transgender and marvelous people in the abbreviation LGBTQ.
Last week, HHS officials suggested cutting 988 Lifeline LGBTQ.
In a statement by the NBC News at the time, the HHS press -secretary described this option as a “chat service where children are advised to accept a radical gender ideology” Advisors “without the consent and knowledge of the parents.”
The legislation adopted in 2020 by the US Congress demanded from 988 Lifely to provide services and staff specifically for LGBTC people, as well as for other risk groups such as rural and Native American Americans.
The legislation noted that the LGBTC youth “more than 4 times more often thinking of suicide than their peers, from 1 in the 5th LGBTC -Moladen and more than 1 of 3 transgenders, which reports on suicide.”
The law received two -party support – including from Donald Trump, who then served his first presidential term, and signed a law on the law.
According to 988 Lifeline, the LGBTQ community “are disproportionately at risk of suicide and other mental health from the historical and constant structural violence.”
The Trevor project began to provide its services through 988 life in 2022. In 2024 he served more than 231,000 crisis contacts, the organization said. It states that he will continue to provide his own independent services.
The decision to eliminate the prescribed LGBTQ of the 988 youth version comes against Trump’s jolts to reduce services, support and access for transgenders throughout the federal government.
He pushed to the end of the diversity, capital and policy of inclusion (Dei) in the federal government, claiming that such programs are discriminatory.
The president also ordered the removal of transgenders from the US military and issued an executive order that the United States recognizes only two sexes – men and women.
The US State Department also announced that it would no longer allow the applicants to choose “X” as a sex in US passports. Instead, transgender people should choose “a man” or “women” who correspond to their gender intended at birth.
