Martha Plimpton He has never forgotten what experience was that River Phoenix“First Love” and how he had trouble with fame before his death at the age of 23.
“It wasn’t as equal, I think, as maybe some other people could be to handle those things,” said Plimpton, 54, about the Phoenix’s rise to fame during the episode Tuesday, June 17, Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s “Lunch on IPodcast.
He explained, “Because he was a very innocent human being, very innocent and human. So Hollywood’s business contradictions and shows were much more difficult for him.” Plimpton noted, “It was easier for me, because I was brought up in New York and I was already cynic by the time I was 13.”
The Stip The actress added: “I think fame is very difficult on the river. I think he really didn’t know what to do with all that. He wanted to do good. The contradictions of it were too difficult.”
Plimpton and Phoenix met as teenagers filming 1986’s The mosquito coast where they triggered a four -year romance. (The movie came out the same year as Stand lovewhich is one of Phoenix’s most iconic roles.)
During their relationship, Plimpton saw a Phoenix career in his skill including being in his blouse 1 at the 1989 Academy Awards where he was nominated for the best actor in a supporting role for his part in Run on blank. Plimpton was also part of the project, playing Lorna Phillips, while Phoenix portrayed Danny Pope.
After they split, Plimpton and Phoenix stayed close friends Up to his death in 1993 at the age of 23.
“We stayed friends. We were each other’s first love,” he remembered. “That relationship never really disappears. You can never let something like that go. It’s too important and too, like, change.”
The Raise hope The actress dearly mentioned her time with Phoenix, saying, “I mean, she has made you who you are, especially in those formal years. I mean, it’s a huge part of who I am.”
While Phoenix’s life was cut short after he suffered a drug overdose outside Los Angeles’ famous Viper Room, Plimpton is confident if the actor had a time he would have overcome his addiction issues – and had become an example of what not to do.
“It was fortunate that I and his family, his brothers and sisters”He shared.“ I think, you know, his personality or affliction, his illness was incredibly difficult for him to control himself. “
He said through tears, “And he never got the help I think he would have done amazingly well with if he had had that help. “
Plimpton was choked, adding, “I think he would have been an incredible advocate for sobriety and for people who are struggling with addiction. Unfortunately he had a chance to do so. But yes, I miss him every day.”
At the time of his death, River was survived by his parents, John and Prosecut “Heart” Phoenixand his four brothers and sisters: Joaquin. Gloom. Freedom and Summer Phoenixall of them following acting at an early age.
