Australia launched a new opening couple at the ICC 2023-25 World Test Championship against South Africa in The Lord’s with Usman Khawaja opening tickets with Marnus Labuschagne.
This route was made by the Aussies because they wanted to house Cameron Green in the XI performance, and the All-Rounder was delivered the place no. 3 with Marnus Labuschagne moving forward to open the entrances.
At the first entrances to the WTC final, Usman Khawaja brought a 20 ball duck and Marnus Labuschagne fell 56-Ball 17. In the second post, Usman Khawaja left after scoring 6 23 balls runs, and Marnus Labuschagne recorded 22 runs of 64 balls. Kagiso Rabada fired Usman Khawaja at both entries, while Marco Jansen cleared Marnus Labuschagne in the game.
Although Khawaja seemed miserable in the WTC final, he generally had good races at the WTC 2023-25, ending as the maximum in Australia with 1428 runs at an average of 39.66, while Marnus Labuschagne was horrible, since he scored only 974 rolls at an average of 27.82.
Speaking after the final loss of the WTC, Australia’s main coach Andrew McDonald said that Marnus Labuschagne works for a lot in his game, but his recent performances with the bat have left and the direction of the disappointed team.
He added that selectors and team management believe that Marnus Labuschagne can be a key member of the test team that will be launched for the next 4-5 years, but they have to decide when the right time is to drop it.
“It is a large part of the team’s future. Anyone promising 45, 46 in test cricket at this age is important. We have older players closer than the end than the beginning. We have some younger players who come in,” said Andrew McDonald as quoted by Espncricinfo.
“If you can get your game in good order over the next four or five years, you can base this battle order. But for the moment it would be disappointed with the returns. He has lost the big scores. But we are sure he could return to the best and, therefore, why we continue to choose it. And at what point do we stop collecting it?
“I think most players throughout the trip fell sometime. I think he had a positive week here where he worked in the right things and he had a great preparation. There is no hardest worker than Marnus. Now this is just the return. And for the moment, as I said, I would be disappointed.”
Andrew McDonald’s statements to Marnus Labuschagne was a clear suggestion that selectors could have planned to leave the team in the next three-game test series against the West Indies.
But Usman Khawaja has escaped from Axing as he has received support from the main coach. Andrew McDonald said that Usman Khawaja is still a crucial part of the XI test and will not be tried very much based on a couple of failures in the WTC final.
He added that Usman Khawaja will get the same treatment selectors as the coach gave to his former opening partner David Warner, who received a lot of support during the last stages of his career when questions were asked about his place.
“He has a contract, he is an important player. He gives us stability at his best at the top. And we like to look at our players at his best,” he said.
“Without a doubt, a couple of failures here and people are starting to talk about it is the end. I do not see a date of completion with the way of forming -the way to prepare -the way he moves. He returned to Shield Cricket, he got 100 last (season). So I think there are many races.
“It was a bit the same with Davey too. The way he moved, we saw some positive in this. We knew the runs were around the corner. We feel like Usman had a lot to play.”
