Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez apologized to the Spanish people after the escalation of the corruption scandal reduced the party’s senior party.
Sanchez, who has led Spain since 2018, said that there was no such thing as “zero corruption”, adding that he was wrong to trust Santos Serdan, the secretary of his party and the close political counterpart.
Cerdán was asked to testify in court after the judge suggested that he may have acted with former party officials on the wrong award of state contracts in exchange for answers.
He stated that he left on Thursday to defend himself in the Supreme Court on June 25, claiming that “he never committed a crime and was not an accomplice.”
Against the backdrop of mounting speculation over his own future, the Prime Minister called the press conference, trying to get away from the creeping scandal. He said he knew nothing about the corruption case and instead pledged to rebuild his socialist PSOE party.
He rejected the calls for the early elections, insisting that the next national vote would not take place until 2027, and its government will continue its “political project”.
“It’s not about me, and it’s not about the socialist party,” he said.
Despite its seven years in power, Sanchez led the shaky coalition, secured after the Conservative Popular Party won the elections in 2023, but was unable to create a government.
While the opposition demanded on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Yoland Diaz from the Left Sumar coalition partner said she also wanted explanations.
The first appearance of Sanchez, who answered media questions, came to Spain after the national electricity shutdown in April.
Speaking from the Socialist Party (PSOE) headquarters in Madrid, the Prime Minister said that by Thursday morning he was convinced of Santos Cordon’s integrity and wanted to apologize to Spanish citizens.
“There is no such thing as zero corruption,” he said. “We didn’t have to trust him.”
Sanchez said that, like many others, he had his shortcomings and asked the Spanish people forgiveness.
He continued to accuse the conservatives that his government siege on many questions.
Sanchez encountered repeated political crises and threatened to stop in April 2024.
In April 2024, he needed five days to resolve his future when the court decided to open a preliminary case against his wife from the accusations related to business cases.
