Hearn says Haney wants to be “paid well” to return

Eddie Hearn said that Devin Haney wanted to be paid well for his setup fight and not the kind of money that these types of matches usually pay. He feels BLK Prime might have been willing to pay Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) the money he wanted.

According to Hearn, Devin still wants the money that will be paid for the compelling fights fans want to see. That’s unrealistic for a tune-up fight designed to knock off the rust, show it off against a fodder opponent and boost his confidence.

Hearn says Turki Al-Shiekh wants big fights, and that’s not in line with what Haney needs with a tune-up to prepare him for a rematch with Ryan Garcia. If Devin were to face a good opponent on Turki’s card, there’s a good chance he’d lose if he was a half-decent guy with some pop to his punches.

Turki probably wouldn’t give Haney a soft job like George Kambosos Jr., Regis Prograis or Jorge Linares. I would want real quality like Jaron Ennis, Richardson Hitchins, Eimantas Stanionis or Brian Norman Jr. All of these fighters would probably beat Haney in style.

This suggests that Haney is still considered a big name or a champion despite coming off a 12-round, three-knock majority decision loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20 of last year. The loss was later overturned by the New York State Athletic Commission due to Ryan testing positive for the banned PED Ostarine, but fans still saw it as a loss.

It will be interesting to see who Devin fights at BLK Prime on March 25th. Will they let him fight a tomato can and pay him top dollar, or insist on his money’s worth? If so, Haney will likely lose and ruin his chances for a rematch with Garcia unless he’s willing to fight him after a loss. I wouldn’t switch to Kingry to do this anymore because he doesn’t seem interested in taking risky fights either.
