According to reports, Subriel Matias and Elvis Rodriguez could fight for the No. 1 spot in the IBF light welterweight rankings.
The potential clash has not been confirmed and could hinge on whether WBO 140-pound champion Teofimo Lopez decides to deviate by defending against dangerous former IBF champion Matias (21-2, 21 KOs). Considering how Teo complains to X 24/7 about Top Rank, Matias may choose not to.
‘The Dominican Kid’ Rodriguez (17-1-1, 13 is ranked No. 7 with the IBF at 140 and has won his last six fights since losing to Kenneth Sims Jr. via an eight-round majority decision on 22 of May 2021.
Matias, 32, lost his IBF title to Liam Paro last year on June 15, suffering in a brawl that was freely officiated by the referee. Paro got away with a lot of rough tactics that should have resulted in a point warning and point deductions in that fight.
Richardson Hitchins now holds the IBF light welterweight title after defeating Paro by a 12-round split decision last month on June 7. Therefore, if the Matias-Rodriguez fight happens, the winner would face Hitchins for the IBF title.
“BREAKING NEWS: As Teofimo López plays negotiator on social media and even wonders how much it would cost to buy out his contract, the rumors don’t stop! 🥊 There is talk of a possible showdown between Subriel Matias and Elvis Rodriguez for the No. 1 spot in the IBF,” César Seda told X.
