Luciano Spalletti has been sacked as Italy coach, but will oversee his classification of the World Cup with Moldova before leaving his place.
Italy, which has not been qualified for the World Cup since 2014, when they went out to the group stage, made a terrible start of classification for the 2026 tournament on Friday.
Norway was crushed by 3-0 by Norway, who now traveled nine points in the UEFA I. standings group. They are six points behind Israel in second place after playing two less games. Each of the twelve runners-up in the group will advance to the play-offs.
Faced with the humiliating perspective of losing in a world cup of 48 teams expanded, Italy has acted, rejecting Spalletti after less than two years at work.
Spalletti revealed the decision at a burning press conference before Monday’s game with Moldova at Reggio Emilia, who will now serve as a farewell.
“We talked last night and told me that I will be relieved of my position as the main coach of the national team,” SPALLETTI said.
“He lamented, given the relationship we have, had no intention of giving up.
“I would have preferred to stay -and do my job, especially when things do not go well. However, if it is an exoneration, I have to accept it. I have always seen this role as a service to the homeland and I want to help the future of the national team.
“I think it is right to look for the best, I will terminate my contract. I will be there tomorrow night against Moldova. I have always maintained that my players are strong. The results of my management are what they are and I have to take responsibility.
“I love this t -shirt, this job and the players I trained. Tomorrow night I will ask them to ask them, even if I couldn’t get them to show them as best.
“I did not want to end the situation of the other night, but with a good game. I have always told the boys who are the right boys to go to the World Cup. There have been complications, but now I was expecting a level of conscience and showing that they are still the right boys.”
Asked about what he said at his meeting with the President of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, Spalletti replied: “He would have continued with this group. There is an assessment that we need to do about how we arrived at these games.
“Many players worked out at the end of the season, we were not in the best way. But they are my players. Even those with injuries were in a position to be called.”
Spalletti brought Italy to the Euro 2024, but the defense of his European title ended with a 2-0 surprise defeat against Switzerland in the last 16.
He has won 11 of his 23 games in charge, there are six.
Spalletti said that he would change anything of his time as a coach: “I also do not know. I was convinced that it would not be a walk in the park, but I would still do it in the World Cup. I am still convinced. This was my conviction when I was talking to Gravina.
“My world does not collapse when I lose games. There is a position between vision and acceptance of the result, but I am well below the level needed because they are strong players. To refresh in the past it is a waste of time. The past cannot be affected. Now it is imperative to play a game worthy of the shirt we are wearing.”
Spalletti assaulted after being asked if he was betrayed by Gravina, who will now be in charge of finding a successor, with Claudio Ranii and Stefano Pioli seen as candidates for work.
