Fox’s recreation “Malcolm in the Middle” was practically my favorite type of publishing when I was in college well over 15 years ago. Between studying sessions (or, rather, to avoid them), I quickly fell in love with Linwood Boomer’s sitcom, which was about four horrendously naughty and mischievous brothers – Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), Reese (Justin Berfield), Dewey (Erik per Sullivan), and Francis), and Francis (Christopher Masterson)
While the show may have appeared as your typical silly and innocent family comedy of the aughts, its writers and actors constantly pushed the great and witty humor of the series to the limits of its TV-PG rating 12. Endless bullying, emotional treatment, anuniongred parenting, family dysfunction, and the whim of violence along with other atrocities. I think it’s fair to say that the series was ahead of her time, as long as a family sitting comedy went in the 2000s. It is not a merger that Bryan Cranston sharpened many of his acting chops on this show before he goes Lifetime Role in “Breaking Bad” Vince Gilligan as Walter White. In fact, thanks to Hal, the contrast between her humorous and dramatic range seemed even more impressive.
So, as a long-time fan, I was ecstatic to learn not too far back that the series was getting a revival (or more like a reunion) nearly 20 years after the show ended. Here’s everything we know about it so far.
The whole appeal of revival, as we have seen with other series such as “The X Files,” “Justification: City Primeval,” or “Arrested Development,” is to bring back as many of the original characters and cast members. This is not always easy for several reasons (scheduling issues, retirements, unfortunate deaths), but luckily, most original actors “Malcolm in the Middle” loved it and, more importantly, available to re -appear their roles for a reunion. Bryan Cranston (who, by far, will have become the busiest and most successful cast member since the show ends) will return happily as the boys’ father, Hal. He even shared his excitement in Interview with Indiewiresaying:
“Seeing the family was the best part. It’s been 20 years since we said goodbye, and now we’re seeing the family again and every person. The boys were all about the same age, now that I was when I started 25 years ago. They have children themselves. It’s great to see.”
Frankie Muniz, now 39, also returns as the title Malcolm alongside two of his original TV brothers, Justin Berfield as Reese and Christopher Masterson as Francis. Erik per Sullivan, who played Dewey, is replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-ClarkWhile Jamie (the youngest son of the family born in the season 4 finale) will be portrayed by Anthony Timpano. (In the original show, Jamie was played by James and Lukas Rodriguez as a toddler.) At 69, Jane Kaczmarek will also repeat her role, thankfully, like the hand and sharp Lois.
Newcomers will include Kiana Madeira (the “Fear Street” trilogy) as Malcolm Tristan’s love, Vaughan Murrae (“I like movies”) as Kelly, the newest addition to the Wilkersons, and Keeley Karsten (“The Fabelmans”) as Self-Self, and Malcolm.
As disappointed as fans of “Malcolm in the Middle” undoubtedly Erik per Sullivan has refused to reappear as Dewey in the revival, the reasons for his rejection are quite understandable. After all, Per Sullivan has been done in practice with acting since the show ended in 2006. Following the series, he starred in an indie dramed under the radar called “Mo” and later had a small role in Joel Schumacher’s common crime play “Twelve.” Since 2010, however, he has not added any acting credits to his name at all. Therefore, it is no surprise that he refused to come back for the revival despite the fact that most of his ex-stars have embraced the opportunity to return.
Thankfully, Sullivan TV’s mother Jane Kaczmarek had nothing but good things to say about it during Interview with Malcolm Franceindicating:
“It’s really good. Malcolm made for seven years, he started at seven, he ended at the age of 14. He wasn’t interested in action at all. He goes to school at a very prestigious American university he has asked us all to be quiet about it, and loves Charles Dickens. He does graduate work in Victorian literature.”
She also noted that she actually admired by Sullivan for making a choice after realizing that the show’s business was not for it and taking a very different kind of life. “I think he was a very grateful child,” he added.
To explain, the non -title revival of “Malcolm in the Middle” will not restart a classic but, instead, a continuation that takes place two decades after the end of the OG series. It will really be a reunion for “Malcolm” fans as much as the actors learn what their characters have been doing since they became adults and went on to have life alone after leaving the family home. What is really excited about this is that only as children and young people during the seven seasons we spent watching them watch between 2000 and 2006. We spent actually watching them, now, we actually get a chance to see how they were all adults and whether they kept most personality features, quirks, quirts, who really had it really, we really see how Halis and Lois. Treating them now, after becoming grandparents and pensioners themselves.
Many of the details about the plot are kept under laps, but so far we know that the default will turn around the anniversary of Hal and Lois’s wedding at the age of 40 (by variety). The couple throws a big party, and, as usual, they insist on the presence of their children, especially Malcolm and his girlfriend (who quickly suck into the chaos that this event turns into). Personally, I can’t wait to find out how warm and ridiculous things go between the Wilkersons this time.
The creator of the Linwood Boomer series has not done much work since “Malcolm” – he was a producer on “The Mindy Project,” wrote a TV film in 2009 that no one heard of, and appeared in a small role in “Santa Clarita Diet” – but he is fully back in charge as an active writer and producer on the revival. This is excellent news for fans, and frankly, it’s great to see how exciting the original Cast members are about working with Boomer again. Here’s the right thing to do with regard to a show as dear and special as “Malcolm.”
The revival will be a limited series containing four episodes that will stream on Disney+ at some point in 2025 (official premiere date has not yet been announced). Ken Kwapis – who steered “A Walk in the Woods” along with 13 episodes of the American “Office” – will direct all episodes, while Bryan Cranston, Tracy Katsky, Gail Berman, Arnon Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann serve as active producers.
Fortunately, we probably won’t have to wait too long to see what a cooked boomer is due to shooting officially wrapped Mid -May 2025. Reflecting on the Last Days on Set, Actor Justin Berfield Posted to Instagram“We’re so lucky to come back to these characters after 20 years and see where they’ve been. I had so much fun going back to my old life as an actor.” Frankie Muniz also shared on Instagram that “this experience immediately was incredibly-as stepped back into the wild world of Malcolm but with all the love and chaos cranking to 11.” Well, let’s hope we have as much fun and good time watching the end result as they did.
