Former Liberia Parliament Speaker was accused of arson for a fire in the House of Representatives, local police said.
A huge ignition erupted last December, a day after the plans for removing Jonathan Fonaty Koffa from the role of the speaker caused protests in the capital of Monrovia.
Koffa was recorded in confrontation with his political opponents, dozens of legislators voted for his impeachment in October over charges of poor management, corruption and conflicts.
Police said on Friday that there were “reliable links” in the incident. Five other legislators were also detained in connection with this case.
Koffa is Previously denied any connection to the fire that exploded.
Gregory’s police chief Gregory Kolman said Koffi had been charged with a number of crimes, including arson, criminal mischief, threatening others and attempted murder.
Kalman said Koffa has used his office and staff “to coordinate discos efforts since November 2023,” AFP news agency reports.
Caffa and several other legislators were summoned to the Liberian National Police headquarters on Friday as “persons who are of interest,” local media reported.
On Saturday, a former speaker and three members of the House of Representatives were taken to Monrovia’s central prison, Frontpage Africa reports.

The day before, tense protests took place on the plans for the removal of KOFFA, with demonstrators, including Assistant President George Wia, arrested.
