The actor, 77, accepted the award before the live show during the Golden Globes Gala on Friday, January 3, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. The honor was presented by his wife, Mary Steenburgen.
“For him, all of you at the Golden Globes should know, receiving the Carol Burnett Award is like being admitted to the heaven of creativity,” the actress, 71, said of Danson in her introduction. In Danson’s speech, he joked that while he usually has a “confused relationship” when it comes to accepting awards, he felt the complete opposite with this particular honor.
“If I win, I feel a bit embarrassed and lonely. If I don’t win, I feel a bit embarrassed and lonely. But not tonight. Not tonight,” he explained. “I’m thrilled to win this award, Carol. I can’t tell you how much it means to me. You’ve brought so much joy and happiness to homes all over the world. You radiating kindness. I love you so much.”
For her part, Burnett shouted “I love you,” to Danson from the audience.
The Carol Burnett Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen. The honoree is chosen based on their body of work and the lasting impact of their television career achievements on the industry and viewers.
Since the award was created in 2019, Danson is the fifth recipient, following in the footsteps of Burnett, 91, Ellen DeGeneres, Norman Lear a Ryan Murphy.
The Golden Globes named Danson an honorary this year in December 2024.
“Ted Danson has entertained audiences for decades with his performances that will forever be an integral part of television history,” Helen Hoehnepresident of the Golden Globes, he said in a statement at the time. “His career is a testament to his extraordinary talent and versatility as an actor and similar to one of those of the same name. It is an honor to present him with the 2025 Carol Burnett Award to celebrate the tremendous impact he has had and continues to have in television.”
Danson is a three-time Golden Globe winner, having previously won trophies for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Something About Amelia in 1985 and for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Cheers in 1990 and 1991. Throughout his career, he has collected 13 nominations, including for his work on Becbadur a Compensation.
This year, Danson won another goal for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for his role as Charles, a widower who goes undercover in a retirement community while assisting a private detective on a case, on the Netflix series Man on the Inside.
In November 2024, Danson opened up about exploring themes of aging on the show.
“For us people, my older age, you still have something enormous to contribute,” he said to sight360 People at the time. “So go out and keep going, and the way you engage with life until the end is an inspiration to those young people behind (you) who are coming up and your children. Because people often think that creativity and contributing to life has a shelf life. There isn’t. That’s self-imposed.”
