Prime Minister Justin Trudeau According to Canadian media reports, he is expected to resign from his position as early as Monday.
This news was first reported by the Globe and Mail on Sunday evening, citing three sources. The newspaper reported that it is not yet clear when the Liberal Party leader will step down, but the resignation is expected to take place before the faction’s national meeting on Wednesday.
The news comes as Trudeau’s popularity continues to decline in Canada, where a national election is scheduled for October 20 this year. Among other problems, the country continues to suffer from a housing crisis, declining GDP per capita and high inflation.
As of December 24, Trudeau’s disapproval rating is around 68%, with 28% of Canadians supporting him, according to Canadian pollster Angus Reid.

The potential resignation also comes after Trudeau, who became prime minister in 2015, has endured a difficult few months in politics. In September, he encountered a vote of no confidence in Parliament, which later failed despite efforts by the Conservative Party to remove him from office.
December 16 of this year Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that she was leaving Trudeau’s cabinet, dealing a significant blow to the prime minister. In her resignation letter, she argued that the only “fair and viable course” was to leave the cabinet.
“Over the past few weeks, you and I have been at odds over the way forward for Canada,” wrote Freeland, who was previously considered a Trudeau supporter.
“Our country has faced a serious challenge,” the letter says. “That means our fiscal powder will be dry today so we have the reserves we might need for a future tariff war.”
Later in December, one of Trudeau’s key allies, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singhannounced that he plans to issue an official vote of no confidence on January 27.

“Regardless of who leads the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up. We will move a clear vote of no confidence in the next sitting of the House of Commons,” said Singh.
Trudeau’s personal choice also drew backlash from his opponents. In late November, Trudeau faced international criticism after being seen dancing at a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto, while devastating riots were taking place in his hometown of Montreal.
Don Stewart, Member of Parliament (MP) for Toronto, called on the Prime Minister in a message on X.
“Outlaw protesters are violently protesting across Montreal. The Prime Minister is dancing,” the Canadian politician wrote. “This is Canada built by a Liberal government.”
“Bring back law and order, safe streets and communities to the Canada we once knew and loved,” Stewart added. Trudeau later condemned the lawlessness, calling the riot “horrific.”
