Three dead after fire at an elderly ward at Hamburg Hospital

Three people were killed after the fire started at night in the hospital, taking care of the elderly in Hamburg.

The North -Germany Fire Brigade said they would not be able to reach three victims during rescue efforts. They died at the scene.

A fire at Marienkrankenhaus was reported shortly after midnight.

About 220 ambulance workers were sent to combat flames and patients treatment. More than 35 people were injured.

Two people were taken to another city hospital for treatment. One person was injured in life, the fire brigade said.

They added that 18 others were seriously injured and 15 more were injured.

Some of the victims were treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

When the first firefighters arrived, the hospital was already burning the room on the ground floor, and the fire threatened to spread to the room above.

Patients in other rooms approached their windows to tell the firefighters that they could not leave the smoke. The building has four floors.

The fire brigade stated that they had used rounds and portable stairs to save patients, several of whom were elderly and had problems with mobility.

Other patients were assisted by the corridors with hooded fire shoots, the respiratory apparatus used by fire brigades in smoke.

Firefighters were able to stop the spread of flames to other rooms in the hospital. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
