According to German defense chief, a member of the Western NATO alliance must be prepared for Russia’s possible attack over the next four years.
General Karsten Breier said BBC that Russia was producing hundreds of tanks a year, many of which could be used to attack NATO Baltic members by 2029 and even before.
He also insisted that NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty, remains the only war in Ukraine, despite the differences in Hungary and Slovakia.
General Breer performed on the sidelines of the Socke-la dialogue, the Singapore Defense Summit organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies of Analytical Centers.
His comments come for weeks ahead of the NATO summit in The Hague, which is expected to discuss defense budgets, among other topics.
General Breier said NATO was faced with a “very serious threat” by Russia, which he had never seen in his 40 years before.
At the moment, he said, Russia has created its strength to a “great extent”, producing about 1500 major combat tanks each year.
“Not every tank goes (war in) Ukraine, but it also goes to the actions and the new military structures that are always facing the West,” he said.
In 2024, Russia also released four million rounds of 152 -millionth ammunition, and not everything went to Ukraine, Gen Brayer added.
“There is an intention there, and there is an accumulation of shares” for a possible future attack on NATO Baltic Member, he said.
“This is what analysts are evaluated – in 2029. So we must be ready for 2029 … If you ask me now, it’s a guarantee that is not earlier than 2029?
Many have long been afraid of the attack on the NATO state, as it could cause a great war between Russia and the US, which is a key member of NATO. According to Article 5 of the NATO Agreement, any attack on the state -member will mean that other members should come to its defense.
General Breier nominated the so -called gap of Suwalki, an area bordering on Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Belarus as one of the most vulnerable ones.
“The Baltic states are indeed subjected to the Russians, and as soon as you really feel it … in the negotiations we lead there,” he said.
According to him, the Estonians gave an analogy close to the forest fires, where they “feel warm, see the flames and smell smoke”, while in Germany “you probably see a little smoke over the horizon and no more.”
General Brayer said this showed different prospects for European states a threat to a possible Russian attack.
According to him, Russia’s view of Ukraine was different from the West, when Moscow views the war as more “continuum” in a greater conflict with NATO, and therefore “tries to find ways in our defense, and it tests it.”
He cited recent attacks on underwater cables in the Baltic Sea, cyber -epads on European public transport and unspecified drones, noticed at German power plants and other infrastructure.
Thus, NATO members should create their fighters again, the Breer gene claimed. “What we need to do now is really leaning and saying to everyone, hey, you will get rid of … Log in because we need it. We need them to defend themselves, which means that you can create restraint.”
Asked by the BBC’s question about NATO cohesion, given the closer relations between Hungary and Slovakia with Moscow, the Breer’s gene insisted that the alliance was still healthy.
He pointed to the decision of Finland and Sweden to join NATO shortly after the start of the war of Ukraine. “I have never seen such unity as it is now,” he said.
“All of them understand the threat that is currently approaching NATO, and everyone understands that we need to work out the curb direction towards collective defense. This is understandable for everyone. Vitality is seen.”
General Breier’s remarks are another sign of a significant change in Germany before defense and Russia.
As in many Western countries, including in the UK, he has been cutting his investments in his military for many years.
But the recognition of the need to change this is increasing, even the Green Party appeared on board a recent vote for lifting German protection.
But, as the Western military and political leaders say, they are ready to fight, whether it is a matter that exceeds reality.
It will take years for the European Military Industrial Base to swirl to speed, to match anywhere near the scale of the weapons that Russia knocks down.
The US also makes up, not creating its defense commitments in Europe to focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
