Iran states that investigates “missing” Indian citizens on the way to Australia

The Iranian Embassy in India has stated that it was investigating the case of three Indian citizens who were missing in Tehran earlier this month.

Men, all of whom from the northern state of Punjab, stopped in Iran on May 1 and were on their way to Australia, where a local tourist agent promised a profitable job.

Their families claim that they were abducted after the arrival of unknown people who require ransom 5 million ($ 63,000; £ 47,000).

The statement happened a day after the Indian Embassy in Iran stated that it “strongly took the case with the Iranian authorities” and asked that the missing Indians “urgently leaks and their security”.

Many Indians, especially from Punjab, go to developed countries in search of employment opportunities and a better life.

Some are victims of scams running travel agents that charge excessive fees and send them through illegal or dangerous routes, often without proper documentation.

Gurdip Kaur spoke about the events that led to the 23-year-old son of Amrito Singh, who went missing in the BBC Punjabi.

The family hired a travel agent in Hoshorpur – where they live – to ensure work permit in Australia.

“Last month, the agent told us that my son’s visa was approved and asked for Rs 1.8 million as a payment,” she said.

“They told us that on April 26 they had booked a flight from Delhi to Australia. But when my son went there, they told him that his documents were still not ready.”

The agent then told Amritpal that they transferred it on the flight on April 29, but later claimed that even this ticket was canceled.

On May 1, the agent put Amritpal together with two other men in Iran, calling it a stop on his way to Australia, Mr. Kaur said.

After landing Amrytpal, he called his mom to say that he had arrived safely and that the taxi on the way to deliver them to the hotel before the next flight.

But an hour later, Ms. Kaur said her son called again, this time he said he had been abducted.

Before she was able to get any details, the bell decreased sharply, and her son became unavailable.

Ms. Kaur said that the family tried to contact the three agents in Punjab – they first gave them “vague answers” and then missing. The next day, the family found that their homes and offices were closed.

Ms. Kaur said that at the same time, they started getting video calls from unknown people.

At the call, Ms. Kaur claimed that the abductor would show Amritpole and two other men held hostage in the room. They had injuries all over their body, ”she said.

At first, they demanded 20 million rupees, but as a result, they reduced the amount, settling by 5.4 million rupees, said Ms. Kaur.

“But more than 10 days have passed, as we last heard from them,” said Gurdev Singh, Uncle Amrital. So far, the family has not paid any ransom.

Since then, the tourist agents have filed a complaint with the police and an investigation has been investigated.

Meanwhile, about 150 km (93 miles), in the village of Dhuri, the Husan Press Singh House, one of the other missing people remains blocked.

He lived there with his grandmother with his mother, who is now busy the door to his relatives, asking for their help.
