This Memorial DayMany Americans are going to barbecue, enjoy a long weekend or celebrate the beginning of summer. But among the festive events one phrase that you will not – or should not – the heart – is a “happy day of memory”. Unlike the Veterans Day, which celebrates the members of the past and present service, the Day of Remembrance is a solemn occasion to honor US members who have made the final sacrifice. To wish anyone a “happy” memory day, fully misses the purpose of the day.
Memorial Day created after the Civil War and officially as a federal holiday in 1971, dedicated to those who died in military service. Each flag on half, every wreath laid in the Arlington National Cemetery is a life sliced, daughters, parents and friends who never returned home. Their victim has provided the freedom we appreciate.
That’s why the words we choose on this day matters. Memorial Day is not really about celebrating service members. Don’t even stand up for greater benefits for our veterans. It is a day to reflect on the victim of those few brave men and women who have given their lives for our country. Accordingly, we must choose words that promote the true purpose of the day.
Few people learned about this lesson faster than the participants of “Squads”, representative of Ilhan Omar and former Curry Bush representative who received a well -deserved reaction for their tone reports about Memorial Day last year. Both Congress members posted messages that seemed confusing the Veterans Day Memorial Day. Omar wrote: “On #memorialday we honor heroic men and women who served our country”, advocating veterans’ access to mental health services, housing and jobs. Bush repeated a similar rhetoric, saying: “This day of memory and every day we honor our veterans in St. Louis,” after which the call for universal health. Incorrect messages have earned SWIFT from Americans, including many veterans across the country.
Outrage in social media was an important purpose. The reaction was greater than the opportunity to score on the left. The Americans on both sides of the passage gathered to protect the sacredness of one day this year, fully dedicated to those who paid the final victim. Thus, the social shame associated with the misunderstanding of the purpose of the Memory Day, not only justified – is necessary. In the political era, marked by such frivolity, the Americans – especially those who in the chosen leadership – urged to choose words that reflect the burden of this day.
To make it clear, it is not about political correctness. It’s not about the virtue alarm. And this is definitely not about the publication of a more harmful “language police”, which is so common in the campus ivy. It’s just about protecting the day.
