Dexter a How I Met Your Mother are two completely different shows that have something unfortunate in common: each has a series finale so bad that it retroactively ruins what came before, making it hard for fans to revisit even the biggest episodes. DexterThe ending was so bad that I hesitated before watching the surprisingly good follow-up series New Blood. But once I did and then scoped out Dexter: Original Sin (the prequel smashing its way through the ratings), I decided now was the perfect time to watch the original Dexter work showing his bloody magic on Netflix.
If you have never watched Dexter before, you should know its wild premise (ripped straight from Jeff Lindsay’s Dexter novels) before you add it to your Netflix cue. Our title character is a forensic expert with the Miami Police Department who has a shocking secret: he is a serial killer who has been driven by the violent urge of his “Dark Traveler” since seeing his mother brutally murdered. Raised by a policeman who trained his adopted son to kill only bad people, Dexter must now navigate a double life as a mild-mannered bloodline analyst and a ruthless vigilante killer.
Dexter (unlike many shows on Netflix) it has a great cast, incl Michael C. Hall (otherwise best known for Six feet under) won a Golden Globe for his powerful performance. Other great cast members include Julie Benz (oh Buffy a Angel fame) as Dexter and Jennifer Carpenter’s love interest (horror fans will know her from Quarantine a The Exorcism of Emily Rose) as her potty-mouthed sister. And without going into spoilers, later seasons bring in great guest stars, including Jimmy Smits, Edward James OlmosJohn Lithgow, and many more.
If the cast of Dexter It doesn’t inspire you to remove your Netflix account, you might be interested in how many awards and nominations this show about an extraordinary killer has received. The show was nominated for an impressive 24 Primetime Emmys and took home two of them, just as it was nominated for 10 Golden Globe awards and took home two statues. As for Hall, he personally won one of those Golden Globes as well as Satellite, Saturn, and Screen Actor’s Guild awards for his sublime performance as Dexter.
Overall, Dexter impressed critics and fans alike long before it landed on Netflix. Ar Rotten tomatoesthe series has a critical score of 71 percent, and audiences gave it (via the Popcornmeter) 81 percent. This shows that although the series had a terrible fairytale ending, most viewings felt that it was greater than the sum of its parts and that its creativity and clever execution for most of its eight season outweighs the show stumbling quite epically. the finish line at the end.
Also, New Blood really did his best to redeem the strange ending of the original show, and Original Sin proved to be a clever prequel that adds some crunchy context to the earliest adventures of our titular assassin. Together, these two follow-up shows did what I once thought was impossible: keep me interested in the original show despite its deeply flawed ending. And now that Dexter on Netflix, I’ve been enjoying re-watching one of premium cable’s boldest and bloodiest creations.
Will you find Dexter rewarding when you watch (or re-watch) it. on Netflixor is this series one you’d rather enter the Gulf Stream? You won’t know until you press play. And if you’re anything like me, you can look forward to an opening title sequence (a Creative Arts Emmy winner, no less) that will never make you want to skip the introduction.
