Cricket West Indies (CWI) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to grant him the authority to decide who will represent the Caribbean at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, in case of describing the western Indies. The Cricket Windies team has players from various nations from the SobirĂ Caribbean.
The cricket rating process at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 is not yet decided, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the organizers. Both the male and female events will have six teams each. It should still be determined if the qualification will be based on the team rankings.
Only independent nations are allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. CWI’s CEO Chris Dehring stated that the Council wants the right to select which nation of individual Caribbean, such as Jamaica or Barbados, will represent the region.

“ Essentially, if the methodology of the rankings is used by ICC (for example, the top 6), and Wi (men) is 5, we get to choose which of our countries (for example, Jamaica, Barbados, etc.), represent Wi at the Olympic Games and we are not simply left because “ Western Indians ” cannot participate, ” said Chris Dehring in Olympics.
“The CWI is committed to constructive dialogue with the ICC and welcomes the opportunity to work together to shape a qualification process that respects both the Olympic ethos and the realities of the Cricket in the Caribbean,” said the Western Indies Board.
The Windies Cricket team consists of players of 15 nations and different Caribbean territories, such as Jamaica, Barbados, Trinitat and Tobago and Saint Lucia.
For multiple sports events such as Commonwealth Games, the region selects a representative based on results from the intra-CARIBA competition. Barbados competed independently at the 2022 games in Birmingham.
A similar challenge now arises for the United Kingdom, whose cricket structure includes separate entities such as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which could complicate the Olympic representation under current rules.
Cricket only appeared once at the Olympic Games, during the 1900 Paris Games, when Britain defeated France in a two -day game.
The CWI proposed two ways for the Caribbean nations to be qualified for the Olympic cricket. CWI President, Dr. Kishore Sofrefion, stated that the western Indies Cricket deserves a clear path just to compete in the Games.
“The Caribbean has always punctured over its weight at the Olympic Games, inspiring the world with our athletic brightness. The return of the cricket to the Games in 2028 should not exclude our young cracks in the same dream that has inspired our athletes.”
“The Olympic Charter emphasizes equity, transparency and universality. We simply ask that these principles be maintained, not only in spirit, but also in structure. The western Indian cricket must have a way and deserve an opportunity to compete.”
Windies’ men’s cricket team is in fifth place in the ICC T20i ranking, while the women’s team ranks sixth. If the Olympic rating is determined by rankings, both teams are likely to secure their points in the tournament.
