The driver behind the deadly terrorist New Year’s attack in New Orleans set his rental property on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence of a bomb before the attack, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) said.
In a joint statement Agencies revealed Friday that they believe Shamsud-Deen Jabbar, 42, started a small fire in the hallway of his Airbnb rental before the attack and “strategically placed accelerants throughout the home to destroy it and other evidence of his crime.” But they said the fire burned itself out before spreading to other rooms.
The smoldering fire allowed the FBI to obtain evidence from the Airbnb rental, including “precursors for bomb-making material and a private device suspected to be a silencer for a rifle,” the agencies said.

Jabbar also planted two improvised explosive devices along Bourbon Street, authorities said. He did not have time to activate two explosives before death.
“The FBI believes that during the Bourbon Street attack, Jabbar intended to use the transmitter that was found in the F150 truck to detonate two improvised explosive devices that he placed on Bourbon Street,” the agency said.
