As the noise and color of the two -month election campaign combines, the Game of Thrones between the two most powerful families in the Philippines recovers.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos-Jr. and his vice-president Sarah Duterte, involved in bitter hostility and battle for power.
As the allies, they won the landslide in the last presidential election in 2022.
But since their relationship was broken – he accused her of threatening him, she accused him of incompetence and stated that he dreamed of her beheading – these medium -term elections became a critical barometer of the force of these two political dynasties.
And results were not great news for Marcos camp. Usually the current presidents in the Philippines receive most of their elections for the Senate elected in the intermediate elections. The power of the presidential intercession is an important advantage, at least it was in the past.
But not this time.
Only six of the twelve senators – the victims – from the Marcos Alliance, and of those Camille Villar, only half in her camp, because she also accepted the approval of Sarah Duterte.
Four senators are in the Duterte camp, including President Imee Marcos. Two were in the top three winners, ahead of any Marcos candidate.
This is a bad result for the president.
Senators are chosen at a simple, nationwide vote, which is a good testimony of national thought. The result can weaken the authority of the Marcos administration over the last three years of its term, and it raises doubts in terms of disability Sarah Duterte, forcing it.
The relationship between Marcos-Datert’s relationship has been deteriorating almost three years ago by the administration. But only this year is he completely gap.
The decision of the President’s allies in Congress to start impeachment of the Vice President was the first irreparable violation.
Then in March, President Marcos sent his father Sarah, former President Rodrigo Duterte, in International Criminal Court is essentially charges of crime against humanity Above his fierce war on drugs. At present, police also filed a criminal case against her.
Gloves were off. Impeachment will lead to the fact that Sarah Dute will be banned from public office by stopping his ambitions to replace President Marcos in the next election.
Now she is the leader, and few are doubting that when he is successful, she uses the power of the presidency to achieve revenge against Marcos.
But the impeachment requires that two-thirds of the 24-place Senate vote for it, and therefore these medium-term elections are so important for both camps.
Politics in the Philippines is a family business. After the family reaches political power, it holds on to it and passes it around different generations.
Although about 200 influential families, Duters and Marcose are sitting at the top of the pyramid.
Marcoses have been pursued in politics for 80 years. The father of the current president ruled from 1965 to 1986, entering martial law and robbery of billions of dollars from a national wallet.
Mother Bongbong Marcos, Homelda, who at the age of 95 has taken away their vote in this wheelchair elections, is Another more famous figureand not just for her Shoe collection.
His sister Imame was re -elected to the Senate, thanks to the decision to move the defect to the Duterte camp.
His eldest son Sandra is a congressman, and his cousin Martin Romualdez is the Speaker of the lower house and a likely presidential candidate in 2028 – probably the reason why BongBong Marcos was so sought to drive through the impeachment of Sarah Dutert.
In the home province of President Ilacos Nort brother, his wife was elected governor, his nephew elected by Vice Governor and two other cousins elected as city advisers. There are always won there.
Much concerning the Davoo Davoo Davois at the other end of the country.
Even with his prison camera in The Hague, the former President Duterte ran for the mayor of Davao and won easily, although all voters could see him a cardboard expression.
Its absence will not matter because the previous mayor was his son Sebastian, who now takes the work of the vice master. Dutters were Davao mayors for 34 of the last 37 years.
The problem facing both camps is that the senators also usually come from large political families, or are celebrities on their own – many candidates come from the media or show biz.
They have the interests and their own ambitions. Even if it is officially linked to a particular camp, there is no guarantee that they will remain faithful, especially on impeachment.
“Senators in the Philippines are very sensitive to national public opinion because they represent themselves vice-presidents or presidents,” says Cleve Arguels, a political scientist who runs Wr Lumero Research, who monitors public opinion.
“So they always try to read the public mind and from public opinion from future political ambitions.”
In recent months, public sentiment has not been on the president’s side.
Bongbong Marcos has never been a good public speaker, and its stage performances in the company have been popular.
His management management receives low grades in polls, and his decision to detention of former President Duterte and send him to the International Criminal Court representing the Dutert family as a national betrayal.
At an improvised rally in Tondo, a low-income neighborhood in Port Manila, Sarah Duterte played emotionally charging when her father was taken into custody at the Manila International Airport and put a private aircraft in The Hague. It reflected it as an unforgivable treatment of the formerly popular president.
“They didn’t just abducted my dad, they stole him from us,” she said to the crowd.
Also on the stage was President Markas Ime’s older sister, who disagreed with the extradition and jumped the ship into the Duterte camp – although most observers perceive it as a cynical step to take advantage of the Duterte’s popular support so that she could raise her own Senate.
It worked. From a low -part poll through the majority of the company, Imee Marcos managed to clean in “Magic Twelve” when they call the Senators.
What is happening now is difficult to predict, but Marcos’s camp is certainly faced with a heavy fight to force Sarah Dutert impeachment.
Of the 24 senators, only a handful is automatically devoted to the president. The rest will need to be convinced to go with him, and it will not be easy.
This election showed that Dutters still provides very strong public support in some areas, and some in the Marcos’ Alliance are already recorded, saying that they oppose the impeachment of the vice president. The same goes for 12 senators who were not in the election this year.
One of the bright places for the president may be the unexpected election of Bamin Senators and Francis Pangilin, both from the liberal policy wing.
Few polls predicted their victories, which are assumed by the public desire of politicians outside the feuds of Marcos Duts.
None of the Markos Liberali clan was the main opposition of the Markos Dutert team in the 2022 elections.
But they strongly opposed the style of the former President Duterte and maybe afraid that his flexible daughter would be president in 2028. It can be enough to make them vote for impeachment.
It is expected that the trial of impeachment will begin in July. Dutertes are expected to continue to break away from the broken power of the president in public, and both camps will be furiously lobbying behind the scenes to bring the senators to their side.
No president and vice president have never been successfully impeachment in the Philippines. No president and vice -president have never fallen so badly.
It will be a stormy year.
