Mark Karnya told Donald Trump that Canada is “not sold” when the president raised the prospect of becoming a 51st US state, welcoming the Prime Minister at the White House.
Last month, Carney won the election, promising to “stand up” Trump, which imposed tariffs on some Canadian products and sometimes talks about the country’s accession.
The former Central banker responded with a solid but measured tone after the president offered a “wonderful marriage” by including Canada.
Despite the intense relationships recently between the North American neighbors, two men also gave out each other’s praise that was largely a heartfelt office of the Oval Office.
Trump has imposed total tariffs of 25% in Canada and Mexico and import tax tax on cars, some of which were rejected before the negotiations.
The US president, who accuses Canada insufficient to stop the stream of Fentonil South, has charged such duties on steel and aluminum.
The meeting on Tuesday for the first time has met since Karni won the general election in Canada on April 28, a victory, which many attribute concerns in this country on Trump.
But two leaders started with warm words.
Trump called Karni a “very talented person”.
He also said hello to win the election of his guest as “one of the greatest appeals in the history of politics, maybe even more than mine.”
Carney said Trump was a “transformation president”, with a “tireless accent on the US worker, providing his border and securing the world,” and said he “perked up” NATO.
But friction arose when Trump again claimed that Canada would be better within the US.
Karni came prepared with a carefully formulated answer.
“As you know, from real estate, there are some places that are never sold,” he told Trump’s property, like Canada to the Oval Cabinet itself and in the British Bakingham Palace.
“Having met with Canada owners during the last few months of the company, it is not sold. It will never be sold.”
Trump replied, “Never say.”
The US leader traced his own red line when the journalist asked if Carnie could say something to convince him to raise the tariffs.
“No,” he replied. “It’s just as it is.”
“It was a very friendly conversation,” he added. “But we want to make our own cars.”
Trump claimed that the United States subsidized Canada and did not need Canadian goods such as aluminum and steel.
He said he and Carney would discuss “tough moments” at their meeting, but “regardless of nothing, we will be friends with Canada.”
Trump also criticized his visitor’s predecessor Justin Truda, with whom he had a competitive relationship.
However, he said that the meeting with Karni was in a sharp contrast to another recent oval “strike” – a reference to the catastrophic visit of President Valadomir Zelensky in February.
During Canada’s election campaign, Carney claimed that he was a leader who could fight Trump’s “betrayal”, as well as repeling Canada’s threats to US economy and sovereignty.
In his speech, the Liberal leader went so far to say that previously the US and Canadian relations were “finished” and that the Canadians should “fundamentally remake our economy” in Trump’s era.
More than $ 760 billion (570 billion pounds) of goods between Canada and the US last year. Canada is the second largest trading partner after Mexico and the largest export market for the United States.
