Who doesn’t love Steve Martin? From The bride’s father to Murders in the building onlyThe actor/writer/musician never fails to make us laugh.
But it’s been time since the actor starred in a film that was truly bold and pushed the limits of good taste. One of his best -known comedies, The jerkControversial even when he came out in 1979, and remains to this day.
The jerk Only have Score of 84 percent on rotten tomatoesremarkably low for a film that is now considered a classic. But that shows that the humor of the film is divisive; If you get it, you will laugh a lot, but if you don’t, you won’t find it funny at all.
If you have not watched The jerk And yet, this is the perfect time to see what all the fuss is. Netflix has just been added to their library, so if you already have a subscription, there’s no excuse to add to your queue right now.

Preset The jerk A little problematic, to say the least. “I was born as a poor black child,” said Martin’s character Navin directly at the camera at the start of the film, explaining that he was adopted by a family of black shareholders in Mississippi and did not realize he was “different” until an adult. In today’s climate, the film would probably not even reach the desk of any Hollywood executive.
In the hands of a smaller writer and performer, The jerk Could have become a cheap collection of racial stereotypes (and there are a few seconds that feel barbed according to today’s standards). But Martin and Director Carl Reiner (Who would proceed to work with Martin on The man with two brains, all of me and Dead men not wearing a party) Use the movie to mock racism, making the lofty white main character barrel all jokes. It’s aducacious, but that’s why the humor of the film works so well. It takes large swings with his comedy and always connects.

Martin has always put his whole body in each performance, and The jerk It is no exception. From the absolutely dancing of Martin’s arrhythmic at the beginning of the film (the greatest clue to his true identity) to a hysterical scene when he assumes the murderer was shooting at him trying to hit some cans beside him, The jerk Full of physical comedy that will make you burst out by laughter.

Former Broadway Villager Bernadette Peters Plays Navin Marie’s love interest, Ditzy cosmetologist. The couple sings a beloved duo together, showing Peters’ vocal talents, but his comedy acting actually steals the show. (When she and Navin encounter a big financial barrier, she’s vigilant is funny, “I don’t care about the money – I care about the stuff!”)

The jerk A perfect example of a comedy style “so stupid, it’s smart”. The unapological tranquility of the film is constantly entertaining, and it reminds us that every comedy needs to be. There is a little social commentary about wealth and race, but mostly just a fun, slapstick adventure – and that’s fine.
If you love Steve Martin’s later work, don’t miss this opportunity to look at the film who set up as a leading Hollywood man.
Watch The jerk on Netflix.
