Tiktok star Griffin Johnson, A minority owner to Sandman’s horse, reflects on the 2025 Kentucky Derby.
“Feel that I have disappointed the whole world,” wrote Johnson, 26, through his Instagram story on Saturday, May 3, after his derby loss. “We bounce back. Thanks to every person who watched and supported our Derby Trail. This sport has so much to offer and hope everyone has seen how special it is. On the next triple crown race, we have a whole season left.”

“Most importantly, this guy came off the track healthy,” Johnson wrote in a separate Instagram story. “For a great start to the year. Can’t wait to still show how amazing this sport can be.”
Eventually, Sandman, who entered the race with 5-1 Ods, set 18th in Derby Kentucky 2025. Sovereignty captured the victory at home on Saturday.
Johnson became a minority owner of Sandman via West Point Thoroughbreds, a company that allows clients to become owners or partial owners. The racing horse began at Churchill Downs in June 2024, setting fifth.
“I am totally involved in his life. I go to all his races. I travel anywhere in the world where he races,” Johnson told a local outlet The prairie press in April. “I wash it and feed it. I really get involved with the team, its training, progress reports and how it does. I’ve done it all, preparing to see it after his race. So I’d say we’ve become pretty good friends. It may say I’m good for delicacies, but at least it hosts a good show.”

Johnson, who has collected over 9 million followers on Tiktok, shared last month that he has plans for his next Derby horse and has “full intentions” of “continuing to make it every year.”
“Horse racing has a lot to offer everyone. I think the trip and the people who have joined them have really enjoyed it,” said Johnson. “That’s what keeps me in now. And I hope that, after this year, if we can secure a victory in one of the big Triple Crown races, I can continue to do so over the years for everyone.”
