At his first press conference after the federal election, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Karnya outlined his priorities, including how he would approach the upcoming negotiations with US President Donald Trump.
His election campaign was focused on withstanding Trump’s tariff plans and threats to make Canada 51 US state, about which Karni said Will “never” would happen.
Liberals won 168 seats out of 343 in the House of Commons Canada, but did not match 172 in the elections on Monday on Monday.
Carney’s new office will be oath on May 12.
Here’s some of what we learned from Carney’s press conference on Friday:
Above Karni announced the upcoming visit from King Charles III and Queen Kamila, who will visit Canada at the end of this month.
“This is a historical honor that corresponds to the weight of our time,” he told reporters collected in Ottawa.
Karni says that on May 27 he invited the king to open the 45th Parliament of Canada.
This request is definitely strategic.
Carney said the King’s visit “clearly emphasizes the sovereignty of our country” -the nod for the 51st state of Trump.
Trump also has a well -known admiration for the royal family. In February, UK Prime Minister Sir Kire St. Stermer used his trip to the White House to submit Trump an invitation to King Charles.
King is the head of state of Canada and presented in Canada by General Mary Simon.
After the election, the new parliamentary session is usually opened by the Guardian General, who reads a speech from the throne on behalf of the Prime Minister. The speech read in the Senate of Canada teaches the agenda of the government.
While it is not unprecedented for speech to be read by the head of state, The last time it happened in October 1977 When Queen Elizabeth II read the speech for the second time. The first was in 1957.
Karni will visit the White House on Tuesday, just a week after the federal election.
His first official visit to the White House as Prime Minister goes against the backdrop of defeated ties between close allies after the threat of Trump and the tariffs imposed, as well as the president’s repeated comments on the US state.
Carney said there were two sets of issues that need to be discussed: direct tariffs and wider relationships.
“My government will fight to get the best offer for Canada,” Carney said, making it clear that he would not rush to provide an agreement.
He added that the high -level dialogue indicates the seriousness of the conversation between the leaders.
He said he expects “complex but constructive” discussions with the president.
He also stated that he would strengthen relations with “reliable” trading partners, pointing to the recent conversations he had with the world leaders in Europe and Asia.
In the elections, Canada allocated divisions in Canada on regional, demographic and political lines.
On Friday, Carney said Canada should be combined in this “once in a life crisis”.
“It’s time to come together for our team of Canada and win the big,” he said.
He offered the olive branches of both Canadians who did not vote for his liberal party and his political competitors.
While the Canadians voted for a reliable reaction to Trump, they also sent “a clear message that their cost of life should decline and their communities should be safe,” Carney said.
“As the Prime Minister I heard these messages loudly and clearly, and I will act on them with focus and determination.”
He said he was trying to work with others, including through the passage.
Under Pierre Puiliere leader, the conservative company is largely focused on the cost of living problems and crimes.
The conservatives finished second, forming an official opposition, but Pulivero lost his own place in the Ottawa area.
Carney said he was open to the call of a special election that would allow Puliver to look for another place if it was the way that the Conservatives wanted to go.
“No games,” he said.
