The New Year Test between India and Australia began on January 3 at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). It is a do-or-die encounter for Team India as Australia have already taken a 2-1 lead in the ongoing 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Well, the ground and the captain changed, and even the year, but Virat Kohli’s old problems remained the same as the former Indian captain has once again left one and all disappointed with his batting in the ongoing fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney.
On the third ball of 32, Scott Boland managed to get past the senior India batsman with Beau Webster catching him at third slip. Scott Boland continued to test Kohli outside the off stump and finally got the upper hand. The Australian pacer bowled a 135.8kph delivery, just outside off and back of a length, and Virat Kohli, batting outside the crease to counter the move, hit him lightly.

The ball took the edge and flew to Beau Webster, who dove to his left to take a strong catch. Kohli couldn’t soften his hands enough, and India are now in serious trouble with four wickets for just 72. Kohli had been dropping similar deliveries earlier, but he couldn’t control his intent and lost his wicket, leaving for only 17 minutes. 69 balls at the SCG.
After yet another failure in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, fans were furious with Virat Kohli for going out in the same style. Fans have started sharing Thanks, Virat Kohli posts, demanding his retirement from Test cricket. Many have been calling him a stupid batsman.

He keeps trying to play offside and ends up kicking his goal. He’s not done now, he should retire gracefully

Virat seems to have adopted the ‘nick it’ style, with no signs of fixing it. It’s disappointing to see such a great player fall into the same trap over and over again. #AUSWIN #ViratKohli

Kohli should have been dropped and Rohit should have been asked to complete the series.

Meanwhile, Steve Smith was fully convinced that he caught Virat Kohli cleanly on Day 1 of the ongoing New Year’s Test in Sydney, but was left disappointed when the decision did not go well. The incident unfolded in the eighth over after India elected to bat.
The hot right-hander, facing his first delivery, edged a Scott Boland delivery in the second. Steve Smith dropped low to his right and appeared to catch the ball close to the ground before flicking it to Marnus Labuschagne at Gully, who completed the catch.

However, the field umpires decided to review the catch. Television umpire Joel Wilson carefully scrutinized the footage and ruled Kohli out as the ball had touched the ground briefly before Smith caught it. However, you are 100% sure that the capture was valid.
When asked if he put his hand under the ball, Steve Smith told Fox Sports on the lunch break: “100%. Not denying it in any way, 100%. But the referee has made the decision We will move on.”
Even former Australia captain Ricky Ponting disagreed with the third umpire’s decision to give Kohli a lifeline only to lose later in the innings at the SCG.
Ricky Ponting said on air during commentary with 7Cricket: “For me, if (the ball) had come out of (Smith’s) hand, I wouldn’t have been able to catch it. That’s what I’m saying; I think the his fingers are clearly under the ball… Look where his index finger is; it’s still under the ball.”
