Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo seek to raise the immunity of former President Joseph Kabila from persecution after charge of supporting rebels in the east.
On Wednesday, a “significant composition of documents, testimony and material facts” appeared that connect Kabyla to the M23 armed group, Justice Minister Constant Mutombi said.
The M23 is currently controlled by parts of the rich mineral to the east of the country after significant achievements earlier this year.
The 53 -year -old Kabila did not comment on the allegations, but in the past denied any connection with the rebels.
He ruled Dr. Congo for 18 years after his father Laurent, who was shot dead in 2001. Joseph Kahli was only 29 years old at the time.
After leaving, he was given the “Senator for Life” title, giving him legal immunity.
In order to prosecute the court, Dr. Congo’s military prosecutor asked the Senate to cancel it.
Last month, there were reports that Kabila returned to the country – visiting M23, which launched M23 – after two years in South Africa.
But this was denied his political party, the People’s Party of Reconstruction and Democracy.
