Rosie O’Donnell and Lyle Menendez Have a very special friendship.
The pair, who first crossed trails in 1996 after Lyle wrote a letter to O’Donnell thanking her for advocating for himself and his brother Erik Menendez, has grown particularly in the years since they reconnected in 2022. O’Donnell has continued to advocate for the release of the two Menendez brothers, who are currently serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of their parents in 1989, José Menendez and Mary Louise “Kitty” menendez.
In an interview announced on Saturday, April 26, O’Donnell told Pages six she is talking to Lyle “about two or three times a week.” And while the actress is convinced that the brothers will be released “soon,” he added, “I think that is the only way you can love and care for someone who serves life without parole, is to have endless hope and believe in their ability to come out of this truly inhuman sentence.”
The pair’s friendship has also expanded into personal attitudes on the life of O’Donnell.
“(Lyle) has helped me a lot. Rosie O’Donnell and Lyle Menendez first linked in 1996
The friendship between O’Donnell and Menendez dates all the way back to the mid -1990s. During Interview on Larry King aliveO’Donnell said she believed the Menendez brothers had acted in defense themselves when they killed their parents. Llyle later sent her a letter thanking her for the support, although O’Donnell did not respond immediately. In October 2024, she told Variety she decided to speak to Lyle on Barbara Walters’ council, who said to her, “Ignore him, he is a murderer. He is very cunning.”
They started talking on the phone in 2022

O’Donnell has been open about Lyle’s huge impact on her life. In Interview published in the New York Times On April 12, O’Donnell said that Lyle had given her a new sense of security. “He started calling me regularly from the slate phone thing they have,” he explained. “He would tell me about his life, what he has been doing in prison and, for the first time in my life, I felt safe enough to trust and be vulnerable and love a straight man.”
