The new Prime Minister of Greenland said the island is not “property that can be purchased”, in response to Donald Trump’s repeated calls to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.
On a visit to Copenhagen on Sunday, Jens-Frederick Nielsen said Greenland and Denmark should stand together before the “disrespectful” US rhetoric.
He performed with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederixen in what was considered as another unity show between two leaders.
In the future, Nielsen’s symbolic gesture should return to Greenland on Monday with the King of Denmark Frederick, who will start his four -day royal visit to the island.
“We will never, we will never be a property that can buy, and this message I think is the most important thing for understanding,” said Nielsen, who became Prime Minister of Greenland in April.
He added that Greenland and Denmark should gather closer to each other in the light of a new foreign political situation.
Trump has caused indignation both in Denmark and in Greenland that he has repeatedly said he wants to bring the Arctica Island under US control.
During the speech with Congress in March, Trump said that control over Greenland was needed “for national security and international security”.
He sailed the idea of buying the island and previously refused to exclude with the help of military force, although the US Vice President JD Vance said last month: “We do not think the military force will never.”
Despite criticism of Trump’s words, Nielsen and Frederixen said on Sunday they would be ready to meet with the US President for negotiations.
Nielsen also emphasized that Greenland was ready to deepen ties with the US, saying: “We are ready for strong partnership and greater development, but we want to respect.”
Nielsen’s next visit to Denmark Frederixen’s own trip to Greenland earlier this month.
“You can’t attach other countries,” it was her message for the US president at the time.
This followed by Vens Vihura of the visit to the territoryIt is widely criticized both in Denmark and in Greenland, in which he repeated Trump’s ambition and claimed that Copenhagen “did not do good work” for Greenland.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is controlled by Denmark for about 300 years. The island manages its internal affairs, but in Copenhagen decisions of foreign and defense policy are made.
In the USA, there has long been an interest in the island. There was a military base from World War II, and Trump may also be interested in rare land minerals that could be extracted.
Surveys show that the vast majority of angens wants to become independent of Denmark, but do not want to become part of the United States.
The new coalition government of Greenland, which is formed in March, is headed by the Nielsen Right Democrats, which contributes to the gradual approach to independence.
