AUS vs IND: Sydney Cricket Ground pays tribute to iconic Indian spinners ahead of the fifth and final Test

Ahead of the long-awaited fifth and final test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) has paid tribute to two legendary Indian spinners, highlighting their significant contributions to the sport.

Two legends honored at SCG

The SCG has honored two legendary cricket figures, Bishan Singh Bedi i Shivlal Yadavfor his notable contributions to sport. Both the players have etched their name in the annals of cricket history, especially for their stellar performances in the Test matches held at this iconic venue.

It should be noted that, as a tradition, the visiting team’s dressing room has calico rolls of the score card. By honoring these legends, the SCG not only celebrates their individual brilliance, but also highlights their impact on some of Test cricket’s most memorable moments played on its historic grounds.

“As is tradition at the SCG, the away kit includes the original calico rolls of the SCG scoreboard which stood at the back of the hill from 1924 to 1984. Bedi and Yadav are both names on display in the Indian dressing room for the New Year’s Test,” wrote SCG on X (formerly Twitter).

The spin master

Bedi, known for his classic orthodox left-arm spin, was one of the architects of India’s bowling legacy. His performance at the SCG in 1977-78 during the Golden Jubilee Test is particularly memorable. Bedi’s mesmerizing control and guile saw him claim 12 wickets in the match, which included a career-best 7 for 52 in the first innings. His ability to spin the ball hard and his variations in flight and pace made him one of the most difficult bowlers to face, especially on spin tracks like those occasionally seen at the SCG.

The other celebrated spinner is expected to be Shivlal, although lesser known globally compared to Bedi, his performances have been crucial for India in the recent past. Although the specifics of his Test performances at the SCG are not as widely documented, Shivlal has been recognized for his unique style of bowling that combines orthodox spin with modern variations.
