Let’s take a look at the big boxers who beat old. So who is better when the meeting is raised at first or for some controversy?
In October 1951, at the Madison Square Garden in New York, Rocky Marciano37-0 (32), stopped the former champion Joe ‘The Brown Bomber’ Louis66-2 (52), in the eighth round. It was only the second time Louis stopped.
Behind the eighth round, Louis was demolished twice. First with a left hook, Marciano left Louis for an 8 count of referee Rudy Goldstein. Marciano then sent Louis through the ropes when the Goldstein referee shouted a stop without count.
Marciano then began to cry, after stopping his hero, “The Brown Fire Bright.” Marciano beat Louis when they were both in place?
Ring magazine was called Jack ‘Galveston Giant’ Johnson, the largest heavyweight champion.
In April 1915, heavy weight champion Johnson, 53-5-10, was demolished in the 26th round of a 45 round scheduled for 6:06 ½, Jess ‘Pottawatomie giant’ Willard, 22-5-2, in Oriental Park, Havana, Cuba.
Johnson was in the canvas on his back with both arms crossed to keep the sun out of his eyes, making it look like he took a dive!
Two fights later, Willard lost his title to Jack Dempsey51-5, in Toledo, Ohio. Williard went down seven times to the first lap. Willard was officially stopped at the end of the third before the towel was thrown before the fourth round. Willard had made a beating with his ribs and his broken jaw.
In October 1980, former champion Muhammad ‘The Greatest’ Ali, 56-4, left his retirement after a year and was stopped for the only time in his career for Larry ‘The Easton Murdin’ Holmes, 35-0, after ten rounds. Ali’s Sparring partner treated him a beating on his body. Holmes sometimes proposed to referee Richard Green to stop.
Ali’s long -time cut man, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, advised Ali to never be fought again, saying that he would never work his corner if he did so, after Ali won the title again for the third time, defeating Leon ‘Neon’ Sparks by divided decision.
Would Holmes defeat Prime-Time Ali before losing his license for three years?
In August 1943, at the Madison Square Garden, New York, “Sugar” Ray Robinson, 44-1, defeated the former Henry ‘Henry’ Henry ‘Henry’ Henry ‘Champion’ Champion ‘Armstrong, 132-17-8, more than 10 rounds.
Robinson is considered a pound to pound the largest boxer of all time, and this writer considers Armstrong as the second largest. What would have happened if they were both first when they met?
In November 1982, in Miami’s Orange Bowl, WBC World Champion, Aaron ‘Hawk’ Prryor, 31-0, stopped the world champion of two Alexis divisions “Thin Man” Arguello, 72-5, at the fourteenth round.
Arguello had hurt Prryor in the thirteenth round, similar. It was ahead of two of the three cards. Between the rounds, his coach, Panama Lewis, said to his second, “No, I want the black bottle!”
Prryor went out to the fourteenth Round similar as if he had his “second wind” after drinking from the bottle. After a minute, he had a pit with a punch, forcing referee Christodoulou to stop. What was in the bottle? It looked like at the end of the thirteenth round, Prryor seemed to be ready to be stopped in the next round, but it was full of energy. The commission was then not checked by the bottle. What if you had not given a drink from that bottle?
