Pope Franciswho served as leader of the Catholic Church since 2013, died at the age of 88.
“Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, aged 88 at his residence at Casa Santa Marta the Vatican,” the Vatican published through social media on Monday, April 21.
“Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sadness I have to proclaim the death of our holy father Francis,” a statement from Cardinal Kevin Farrell he said.
“At 7:35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father’s house. His whole life was consecrated to the service of the Lord and his Church.
“With tremendous thanksgiving for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of the Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the Triune God,” Farrell concluded.
The Pope’s death came just hours after he appeared on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on Sunday, April 20, to wish the crowd gathered a happy Easter.
