BCCI discusses Gambhir’s future as head coach of Team India

Gautam Gambhir could be walking on thin ice like Team India head coach Reports suggest that the BCCI is seriously considering changes if the team does not bounce back soon. India’s ongoing underwhelming run Border-Gavaskar Trophy has already set off alarm bells.

India, led by Rohit Sharmaleads 1-2 in five-Test series against Australia. The series has been tough, especially for the top-order batsmen, whose struggles have been glaring. There is only one test left and the Champions Trophy around the corner, the pressure increases.

“If things don’t improve soon, even Gambhir’s position will not be secure,” said a senior BCCI official revealed

A tough start to Gambhir’s coaching tenure

This tour of Australia is Gambhir’s first big challenge as head coach, and so far, it hasn’t gone as planned. The team that conquered Australia in his last two visits he now looks far from his best.

Gambhir’s style of constantly experimenting with the playing XI has also left some players uneasy. While one bet like Nitish Reddy has worked, his handling of others like Shubman Gill has been criticized.

“Some players feel insecure about their places. This is not helping the morale of the team,” the source added.

Changes in the BCCI add to the uncertainty

Things are also complicated at the administrative level. With Jay Shah moving to the ICC as president, the BCCI is in for a bit of a shakeup. His replacement will only take over after January 12, leaving the Board without clear direction for now.

Roger Binny, the current BCCI president, has stayed out of big decisions, which hasn’t helped. The uncertainty surrounding leadership makes the situation with Gambhir even more complicated.

Not the first choice, but the only choice?

When Gambhir was appointed as head coach after the T20 World Cup 2024it was not the first choice of the Board. VVS Laxman was initially preferred but scheduling conflicts and lack of interest from international names made Gambhir the default choice.

“It wasn’t the first choice, but certain situations led to his appointment,” explained the manager.

Since taking over, Gambhir’s career has not been great. India have lost series against Sri Lanka, new zealandand now he finds himself fighting in Australia. Many believe his experience is best suited to T20 cricket, where he has excelled as both a captain and a mentor.

Kohli’s struggles: An unanswered problem

One of the biggest criticisms against Gambhir has been his inability to tackle Virat Kohli’s continuous struggles outside the stump. Kohli’s dismissals in this channel have been a recurring problem, but no concrete solution has emerged.

“Gambhir knows what’s going on, he’s seen it as a player and as a coach. If he knows, why hasn’t he fixed it?” asked a former India cricketer with more than 90 Tests to his name.
